The autorización de regreso is Spain’s solution to a common problem: you are a legal resident, your TIE card has just expired (and renewal is in process), and you need to travel. Without a valid residence permit or national visa, you cannot re-enter Spain from outside the Schengen Area. The autorización de regreso fills this gap — it is a 90-day temporary travel authorisation that proves your legal status in Spain and allows you to return.

When Do You Need One?

The most common situations:

SituationDo you need one?
TIE expired, renewal filed, need to travel outside Schengen✅ Yes
TIE expired, renewal NOT filed, need to travel❌ Do not travel — fix residency first
TIE valid, need to travel❌ No — use your TIE card as travel document
Original entry visa expired, residency authorisation pending✅ Possibly yes
Waiting for initial TIE card (first application), visa expired✅ Yes — if you need to travel and have proof of pending TIE

Key rule: If your TIE card is valid, you do not need an autorización de regreso — your TIE card is your re-entry document.

Who Issues It

The autorización de regreso is issued at the Oficina de Extranjería in your province of residence — the same office that processes TIE cards and residency renewals.

How to Get an Autorización de Regreso

Step 1: Book a cita previa

Book an appointment at your local Oficina de Extranjería via sede.gob.es → Extranjería → Cita previa → Select your province → Select Autorización de Regreso.

Do this as early as possible — ideally before you book your travel, as appointment availability varies significantly by city.

Step 2: Pay the Tasa 790

The fee is approximately €15.97 (same code as the TIE). Pay at any Spanish bank branch with the Tasa 790 form (downloaded from the Ministry of Interior website) or online.

Step 3: Complete Form EX-04

Download Form EX-04 (Autorización de Regreso) from the Ministry of Interior website. Fill it in Spanish, no corrections.

Step 4: Attend your appointment

Bring:

  • Completed EX-04 form (original + copy)
  • Valid passport (original + copy of all pages)
  • Your expired TIE card (the one being renewed) — original + copy
  • Proof of your pending renewal (appointment confirmation, submission receipt, or letter from Extranjería confirming the renewal is in process)
  • Tasa 790 payment receipt (original + copy)
  • Proof of travel need (flight booking, family emergency letter, etc.) — not always required but useful

Step 5: Receive your autorización

Processing can be same-day (some offices) or take 1–4 weeks depending on location and workload. The document is typically issued as a stamp or sticker in your passport or as a separate paper document.

Document Checklist

  • EX-04 form — completed in Spanish, signed, no corrections
  • Valid passport — original + copies of all pages
  • Expired TIE card — original + copy
  • Proof of pending renewal — appointment confirmation, fee receipt, or Extranjería letter
  • Tasa 790 payment receipt — original + copy
  • Reason for travel — flight reservation or other proof (recommended)

Important Warnings

Do not travel without it if your TIE is expired. Attempting to re-enter Spain from outside Schengen without a valid TIE or autorización de regreso can result in being denied boarding or refused entry.

Apply before booking travel — appointment availability in major cities is unpredictable. Secure your autorización before buying non-refundable flights.

Your renewal must be actively in process — if you have not yet filed your TIE renewal, sort that first before applying for the autorización de regreso.

90-day limit — the autorización de regreso is not a residency extension; it only allows re-entry. Your underlying residency renewal must be resolved through the standard TIE process.

For Students

Language school and university students whose TIE card expires during the academic year and who need to travel home for holidays face this situation regularly. Plan ahead:

  1. File your TIE renewal before your current TIE expires (submit the renewal application at least 60 days before expiry)
  2. If you need to travel before the new TIE arrives, apply for the autorización de regreso immediately after filing your renewal
  3. Keep all paperwork: renewal submission receipts, appointment confirmations — these are your proof of pending renewal

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an autorización de regreso in Spain?

An autorización de regreso (return authorisation) is a travel document issued to foreign residents of Spain who need to travel outside the Schengen Area temporarily but cannot use their TIE card as a valid travel document — either because the TIE has expired while the renewal is being processed, or because the original entry visa has expired. It authorises re-entry into Spain for a specific period (90 days).

Who needs an autorización de regreso?

You need one if: (1) your TIE residency card has expired and you have filed for renewal (in próroga/renovation), but the new TIE has not been issued yet — and you need to travel outside Spain; (2) your original entry visa has expired but you have pending residency authorisation; or (3) you hold a long-stay residence authorisation but lack a valid travel document to re-enter Spain after a trip abroad.

How long is an autorización de regreso valid?

It is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, for a single trip or multiple trips within that 90-day window (depending on how it is issued). It authorises re-entry into Spain — it is not a Schengen travel document for visiting other Schengen countries freely.

How much does an autorización de regreso cost?

The fee is the Tasa 790 (same as the TIE card fee) — approximately €15.97. This is the only mandatory cost. If you use a gestoría to process it, their fees typically add €50–100.

How long does it take to get an autorización de regreso?

Processing time at the Oficina de Extranjería varies by city. In smaller cities, same-day or 1–3 day processing is possible. In Barcelona, allow 1–4 weeks. Book your cita previa as early as possible — ideally before you book your travel.

Can I travel to other Schengen countries with an autorización de regreso?

The autorización de regreso is issued specifically to allow re-entry into Spain. It is not a standard Schengen travel document. Whether you can use it to transit through or visit other Schengen countries depends on the policy of each country. In practice, many travellers use it only for the Spain re-entry purpose. For Schengen travel, your valid TIE card or national visa is the standard document.
