The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is Spain’s unique identification number for foreigners. Without one, you cannot sign a contract, open most bank accounts, buy property, pay Spanish taxes, or register as a resident. Every foreigner who lives in, works in, or conducts significant business in Spain needs a NIE.

What Does NIE Stand For?

NIE = Número de Identidad de Extranjero — Foreigner Identity Number.

The NIE is formatted as: one letter + seven digits + one letter. Example: X-1234567-Z

It appears:

  • On your NIE certificate (a paper document issued at the appointment)
  • On your TIE card (if you have a residency permit)
  • On all Spanish tax and administrative documents

Who Needs a NIE?

You need a NIE if you are a foreign national and want to:

ActivityNIE required?
Open a Spanish bank account✅ Most banks
Sign a rental contract✅ Legally required
Buy property in Spain✅ Mandatory
Pay Spanish taxes✅ Mandatory
Work legally in Spain✅ Mandatory
Register as a resident (empadronamiento)✅ Required
Apply for a TIE card✅ NIE is embedded in TIE
Start a company in Spain✅ Mandatory
Receive a salary in Spain✅ Mandatory
Get a Spanish SIM card (some providers)Often required

NIE vs TIE: Key Difference

This is the most common point of confusion:

NIETIE
What it isA number (identifier)A physical card (residency permit)
What it gives youIdentificationRight to live/work in Spain
FormatX-1234567-ZPhysical ID card
Who gets itAny foreigner needing IDResidents staying 6+ months
Contains NIE?It IS the NIE✅ Yes — your NIE is on your TIE

If you are a student staying more than 6 months: you will have both. Your TIE card is issued with your NIE number embedded in it. When people say “get your NIE,” they usually mean getting the TIE card (which includes the NIE).

For stays under 6 months, you may need just the NIE certificate (paper document) without a TIE.

How to Get a NIE in Spain

Step 1: Book the appointment (cita previa)

Go to sede.gob.es → Extranjería → Cita previa. Select:

  • Province (e.g., Barcelona)
  • Procedure: Asignación de NIE (for non-residents) or Toma de huellas (if getting a TIE/residency permit)

Barcelona warning: NIE appointment slots in Barcelona fill within minutes of new slots opening. Check at 7–9am on Tuesday/Wednesday when new slots typically appear.

Step 2: Complete form EX-15

Download and fill in Form EX-15 (for non-resident NIE) from the Ministry of Interior website. Fill it in Spanish, no corrections or alterations.

Step 3: Pay the fee (Tasa 012)

Pay the Tasa 012 fee (€9.86) at any Spanish bank or online at agenciatributaria.es. Bring the payment receipt to your appointment.

Step 4: Attend your appointment

Bring to the Oficina de Extranjería:

  • Completed EX-15 form (original + copy)
  • Valid passport (original + copy of all pages)
  • Tasa 012 payment receipt (original + copy)
  • Proof of why you need the NIE (acceptance letter, work contract, property deed, etc.)
  • 1 passport photo (some offices require this)

Step 5: Receive your NIE certificate

Processing is same-day at most offices. You receive a white paper certificate with your NIE number. Keep this safe — it is the only proof of your NIE outside of TIE card.

NIE for Students

If you are a student planning to stay more than 6 months in Spain:

  1. You will get your NIE via the TIE card process — not the standalone NIE appointment
  2. After arriving in Spain on your student visa, you have 30 days to book a toma de huellas (fingerprint) appointment for your TIE
  3. Your TIE card contains your NIE — you do not need a separate NIE appointment
  4. If you need the NIE number urgently (e.g., to open a bank account) before your TIE is issued, you can ask the immigration office for a temporary NIE certificate

For the full student TIE process, see our Cita Previa Barcelona guide.

Getting a NIE Before Arriving in Spain

If you are not yet in Spain and need a NIE (e.g., to buy property remotely), you can apply at a Spanish consulate in your home country:

  1. Book an appointment at your nearest Spanish consulate
  2. Submit Form EX-15 with supporting documentation
  3. The consulate processes the NIE and notifies you

Processing time via consulate: 2–6 weeks depending on the consulate.

NIE for Non-Residents (Property Buyers, Short Stays)

If you are a non-resident who needs a NIE (e.g., buying property, signing a business contract), you apply for the same NIE via Form EX-15 at the Oficina de Extranjería, providing evidence of your economic reason for needing the number.

Practical Tips

  • Keep your NIE certificate safe — it is difficult to replace if lost
  • Your NIE never expires — it is a permanent number assigned to you in Spain’s tax registry
  • If you lose it: you can request a replacement certificate at an Oficina de Extranjería with your passport
  • No need to renew: unlike TIE cards, the NIE number itself does not expire; only the TIE card (residency permit) has an expiry
  • Tax use: your NIE is also your NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) for tax purposes once you become a Spanish tax resident

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a NIE number in Spain?

NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero — Foreigner Identity Number. It is Spain's unique tax and identification number assigned to non-Spanish nationals who need to interact with Spanish authorities, sign contracts, open bank accounts, buy property, pay taxes, or register as a resident. Every foreigner living in Spain legally needs one.

Is a NIE number the same as a residency permit?

No. A NIE number is just a number — an identifier. It does not give you the right to live or work in Spain. A residency permit (like a TIE card) is your legal authorization to reside. You can have a NIE without having residency rights, and residents always have a NIE embedded in their TIE card.

How long does it take to get a NIE in Spain?

Booking the appointment takes 1–4 weeks depending on the city and time of year. Barcelona is notoriously difficult; smaller cities are faster. Same-day processing is typical once you attend the appointment. The total process from booking to receiving the NIE certificate takes 1–4 weeks.

How much does a NIE number cost in Spain?

The official NIE application fee (Tasa 012) is €9.86. There are no other mandatory government fees. If you use a gestora (administrative agent) to book the appointment or complete the paperwork, their fees are typically €50–150 on top.

Can I get a NIE number without being in Spain?

Yes. Spanish citizens living abroad can apply for a NIE at a Spanish consulate in their home country. Non-Spaniards can also apply at the Spanish consulate before travelling to Spain, if they have a justified reason (property purchase, work contract, etc.).

Do I need a NIE to open a Spanish bank account?

Most Spanish banks require a NIE to open a full current account. However, digital banks like Wise, Revolut, and N26 do not require a NIE — making them the best option for new arrivals who haven't yet obtained their NIE.
