Language school students renewing their TIE in 2026 face rules that did not exist before May 2025. Under Royal Decree 1155/2024, you can renew once only (2 years total maximum), you must pass a DELE or SIELE exam, and your financial proof and insurance must meet the same standard as your initial application. This guide covers every step: documents, DELE requirement, Extranjería appointment, fees, and what happens after your renewal period ends.
The New Rules for 2026: What Changed
Royal Decree 1155/2024, which took effect May 20, 2025, introduced three changes that directly affect language school student renewals. If your guide or immigration advisor predates May 2025, the renewal rules they describe are no longer valid.
| Rule | Before May 2025 | After May 2025 (current) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum renewals | Unlimited | 1 renewal only |
| Maximum total stay (language school) | No ceiling | 2 years |
| DELE/SIELE exam | Not required | Required for renewal |
| Conversion inside Spain | Allowed (tourist → student) | Banned |
Who this affects: Non-EU students who are currently in Spain on a language school student visa and whose authorization expires within the next 12 months.
Who this does NOT affect: University students, FP students, and students who enrolled before May 2025 who are on their FIRST (not yet renewed) authorization — those students are renewing for the first time under the new rules but have not yet used their one renewal.
DELE/SIELE Exam Requirement
To renew your language school student visa, you must present a DELE or SIELE certificate showing a passed exam result. This is a hard requirement with no waiver or exemption — if you do not have a passed certificate, your renewal application will be rejected.
Which exam to take
Both DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) and SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) are accepted. Neither is inherently better — choose based on availability of exam dates in your location and preparation resources you prefer.
| DELE | SIELE | |
|---|---|---|
| Administered by | Instituto Cervantes | Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) + Cervantes + others |
| Available levels | A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 | Modular or full (equivalent to A1–C1) |
| Exam dates | Fixed dates (published annually) | More flexible exam windows |
| Cost | ~€120–180 | ~€130–180 |
| Result time | 3 months | 4–6 weeks |
What level is required
The law (RD 1155/2024) states that the student must “pass” the exam — it does not specify a minimum level. In practice, immigration offices in Barcelona are accepting any passed level. However, to avoid any risk of ambiguity, aim for B1 minimum — this is the most clearly defensible pass level if questioned.
Important: You need the passed certificate, not just registration confirmation or a score report. Allow time for the result to be issued — DELE results take up to 3 months.
Exam dates and registration
DELE exam dates are published annually on the Instituto Cervantes website. Sessions are held approximately 6 times per year in Barcelona (at the Institut Cervantes Barcelona, Carrer d’Alcalà Galiano, 1).
Timeline planning: If your renewal is in September, your exam must be passed and certified before that date. Work backwards: if DELE results take 3 months, you need to sit the exam by June at the latest. Check the exam calendar and register early — popular sessions fill up.
See our DELE Exam Guide for the full process including registration, preparation resources, and what to do if you fail.
Documents Required for Renewal
Nine documents are required. The DELE/SIELE certificate is the new item that most students underestimate — allow 3–6 months from exam registration to received certificate.
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Valid passport | Must be valid through entire new authorization period |
| Current TIE card | Original + photocopy |
| New school acceptance letter | From accredited school; covers next term/year; 20+ hours/week |
| Bank statements | Last 3 months; minimum €600.53/month (IPREM); Spanish statements accepted |
| Health insurance certificate | €30,000+, no co-payments, covers full new period |
| DELE or SIELE certificate | Passed result at any level — required for language school renewal only |
| Completed EX-00 form | Downloaded from extranjería website |
| Fee receipt | Modelo 790, código 052 — ~€16, paid at bank before appointment |
| Empadronamiento certificate | Must show current address; if you moved, update first |
| Passport photo | 35×45mm, white background |
Financial requirement for renewal: Same IPREM base (€600.53/month) but calculated against the new authorization duration. You can now use Spanish bank statements and Spanish employment income (if you worked legally during your studies). See our Financial Requirements guide for exact amounts.
Step-by-Step Renewal Process
The renewal process has 6 steps from preparation to new TIE card. Budget 3–4 months total from document gathering to card in hand.
Step 1: Confirm enrollment and DELE status (90 days before expiry)
- Confirm your school enrollment for the next period
- Check your DELE/SIELE exam certificate status — do you have a passed certificate?
- If not: register for the next available exam immediately; check if you can meet the timing
- Note your TIE expiry date on your calendar with 90-day, 60-day, and 30-day reminders
Step 2: Gather documents (75–60 days before expiry)
- Request new acceptance letter from your school
- Get fresh bank statements (within 30 days of your application date)
- Renew health insurance if expiring during the new period
- Update empadronamiento if you have moved
- Get a new passport photo
Step 3: Pay the fee (60 days before expiry)
Download Modelo 790, código 052 from the Sede Electrónica (hacienda.gob.es). Fill in your details. Pay at any Spanish bank branch (La Caixa, Santander, BBVA, etc.) — approximately €16. Keep the bank-stamped receipt.
Step 4: Book your Extranjería appointment (60 days before)
Go to sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es and book under: “Renovación de autorización de estancia por estudios”
Barcelona: Passeig de la Zona Franca office or Gran Via. Slots release at 7–9am on Tuesday and Wednesday — check early.
See our Cita Previa guide for the full slot booking strategy.
Step 5: Attend appointment (45–60 days before expiry)
Bring all documents (originals + photocopies). Submit application. Receive the resguardo (official receipt) — this is your legal proof of status while waiting.
Step 6: Wait for resolution and collect new TIE (1–3 months)
Processing: 1–3 months. Track via Sede Electrónica or call the office. Once approved, book a new appointment to pay the TIE card fee (Modelo 790, código 012, ~€15.60) and collect fingerprints for the new card.
After the Renewal: Your Options
Your one renewal is now used. When this second authorization expires, your language school student visa status ends. Plan your next step now — do not wait until the expiry date.
Option 1: Switch to university or FP program
The most common path for students who want to stay in Spain longer. Enroll in an accredited university program or public FP (Formación Profesional) before your current authorization expires. Apply for a modificación de residencia (change of visa track) rather than a renewal.
Benefits of switching:
- University/FP track allows unlimited renewals while enrolled
- Automatic 30h/week work rights (no separate permit needed)
- Clear pathway to long-term residency and eventually Spanish citizenship
- Public FP programs are free for all students including non-EU
See our University vs Language School comparison and our Formación Profesional guide.
Option 2: Find employment and apply for a work permit
If you worked legally during your studies (language school students do not have work rights, so this path requires having switched tracks first or having received special authorization), you may be able to transition directly to an employment authorization.
Option 3: Leave Spain
If neither of the above applies, you must leave Spain when the second authorization expires. You may reapply for a new student visa from your home country in the future — there is no formal bar to doing so.
Common Problems and Solutions
My DELE certificate won’t arrive before my appointment
Register for the exam as early as possible, and choose SIELE over DELE if you need a faster turnaround (SIELE results: 4–6 weeks vs DELE: up to 3 months). If your certificate genuinely cannot arrive in time, contact an immigration lawyer — some consulates accept an exam enrollment confirmation plus strong evidence that results are pending, though this is not guaranteed.
I can’t get a cita previa appointment before my permit expires
Attend the Zona Franca office in person at opening time to request a cita de urgencia. Bring your passport with entry stamp and your TIE expiry date visible. Explain the timeline. This is not guaranteed but often works for genuine time-pressure cases. Meanwhile, keep checking the online portal daily at 7–9am.
My authorization expires while I am waiting for the renewal to be approved
This is legally fine as long as you submitted before expiry. Your resguardo (application receipt) proves your status is pending. Carry it everywhere with your passport. Do not leave Spain without speaking to an immigration advisor first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many times can a language school student renew their TIE?
Under Royal Decree 1155/2024 (effective May 20, 2025), language school students can renew their authorization ONCE only. This means a maximum 2-year total stay on a language school student visa. University and FP students are not subject to this cap — they can renew every year while enrolled.
Do I need to pass a DELE or SIELE exam to renew my language school visa?
Yes — if this is your first (and only) renewal as a language school student, you must pass either the DELE or SIELE exam. The law (RD 1155/2024) does not specify the required level — only that the exam must be passed. In practice, consulates and immigration offices are interpreting this as a passed DELE/SIELE at any level, though B1 or B2 is most commonly being accepted.
When should I apply to renew my TIE as a language school student?
Apply 60–90 days before your current TIE expiry date. Book the Extranjería appointment at the 60-day mark — Barcelona's Zona Franca office has 2–4 week wait times and occasionally longer. Do not wait until 30 days before expiry.
What documents do I need to renew my TIE for language school?
Valid passport + copy, current TIE + copy, new school acceptance letter (next term/year), bank statements (last 3 months, minimum €600/month), health insurance certificate covering new period, DELE or SIELE exam certificate (pass required), completed EX-00 form, fee receipt (Modelo 790, código 052, ~€16), empadronamiento certificate, passport photo.
What happens after I use my one renewal? Can I stay in Spain?
After your one renewal expires, you cannot stay in Spain on a language school student visa. Your options are: (1) enroll in a university or FP program and switch to that visa track (which allows unlimited renewals); (2) find qualifying employment and apply for a work permit; (3) leave Spain. The switch to university/FP must happen BEFORE your second-year authorization expires.
Can I switch to a university or FP visa instead of renewing?
Yes — switching from language school to university or FP is a modification of status (modificación de residencia), not a renewal. If you enroll in an accredited university or FP program while your current authorization is still valid, you can change tracks and gain unlimited renewal rights plus 30h/week work authorization. This must be done before your current authorization expires.
What if my TIE expires while waiting for my renewal to be approved?
As long as you submitted your renewal application before expiry and have the official receipt (resguardo), you remain in legal status. The receipt is your proof — carry it everywhere along with your passport. Do not travel internationally while your renewal is pending if you can avoid it.
