The Terminology Confusion — Explained

Many students get confused by Spanish immigration terms. Here’s the plain-English breakdown:

Spanish TermWhat It MeansWhen You Use It
Prórroga de estanciaExtension of current stayStaying in same program, same school, continuing studies
RenovaciónRenewal (informal term, same as prórroga)Used interchangeably with prórroga in practice
Modificación de estanciaChange of study stay conditionsChanging school, changing program type
Modificación de residenciaChange to work permitAfter graduation, transitioning to employment

The bottom line: If you’re continuing to study in Spain and just need more time, you file a prórroga de estancia por estudios. This is what most students call a “renewal” or “extension” — and for this guide, we’ll use those terms interchangeably.

Critical 2026 Update: Language School vs University Rules Are Now Different

Royal Decree 1155/2024 (in force since May 20, 2025) created two separate tracks for student visa renewal. Which track you’re on determines everything about your renewal eligibility.

Your programRenewals allowedDELE/SIELE requiredMaximum total stay
Language school1 renewal (max)✅ Yes — must have passed2 years total
University / Master’sMulti-year, for program duration❌ NoDuration of degree
FP / Vocational (regulated)Multi-year, for program duration❌ NoDuration of program

Language school students: what this means in practice

If you started a 1-year Spanish language school visa, you can renew once to continue for a second year. After that second year, the visa cannot be renewed again under the language school category. If you want to stay in Spain, you need to enroll in a university or accredited degree program and apply for a different visa type.

To be eligible for that one renewal, you must have passed a DELE or SIELE exam. The law (RD 1155/2024, Art. 41) does not specify which level — it requires that you have passed an exam, not that you passed at a particular level.

Do You Need to Extend?

SituationWhat to Do
Same school, continuing same programPrórroga (extension)
Switching to a different school in SpainModificación (change of conditions)
Switching from language course to universityReturn home and apply for new visa type
Adding work permission to existing visaOnly available for university/FP students — Modificación
Finished studies, want to stay for workModificación → work permit or job-seeker visa
Finished studies, want to leave SpainNothing — visa expires naturally

Note: Since RD 1155/2024, you cannot convert a language school visa into a university visa from inside Spain. The switch requires leaving Spain and applying for a new long-stay student visa from your home country.

When to Apply

The application window is:

  • Earliest: 60 days before your current authorization expires
  • Latest: 90 days after your authorization expires

Recommended: Apply 30–45 days before expiry. This gives time to gather documents, book the appointment, and submit without rushing — while not submitting so early that you need updated documents later.

What Happens If You Miss the Window?

TimingStatus
Applied within the window✅ Legal stay continues while processing
Applied up to 90 days after expiry🟡 Irregular stay, but application still accepted — get it in ASAP
Applied more than 90 days after expiry❌ Cannot extend; must leave Spain and reapply from home country

Document Checklist for Extension (Prórroga)

All students (language school and university)

  • EX-00 form — completed and signed
  • Valid passport — original + copy of all pages
  • Current TIE card — original + copy (front and back)
  • Proof of continued enrollment — letter from your school confirming you are enrolled for the next period
  • Academic progress documentation — attendance records, grades, or course completion certificate
  • Proof of financial means — €600/month for the extended period (bank statements, scholarship, or sponsorship)
  • Valid health insurance — minimum €30,000 coverage, no co-payment, valid in Spain
  • Medical certificate — issued within 3 months by a licensed doctor
  • Proof of accommodation — rental contract or student residence confirmation for the extended period
  • Modelo 790 Código 052 — immigration fee payment form (~€16.80)
  • Receipt of previous TIE — to confirm continuity of status

Additional documents: language school renewal only

  • Course completion certificate from your previous enrollment period
  • DELE or SIELE exam certificate — showing a passed result (any level)

On the DELE/SIELE certificate: You must present proof that you have passed the exam, not merely that you have registered for it. Plan your exam date carefully — DELE results take 3–4 months to arrive; SIELE results are available digitally within 3–4 weeks. See our DELE exam guide for visa renewal for registration details and Barcelona exam dates.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Confirm Your Expiry Date and Track

Check the expiry date on your TIE card. Identify whether you are a language school or university student — the documents required differ.

Step 2: Book Your DELE/SIELE Exam (Language School Students)

If you are renewing a language school visa, confirm you have a passed DELE or SIELE exam result. If not, register immediately — DELE registration closes 6–8 weeks before the exam date, and results take 3–4 months. See exam dates in our DELE guide.

Step 3: Get Your School Documentation

Contact your school’s administrative office to request an enrollment continuation letter. Allow 5–10 working days.

Step 4: Update Your Financial Proof

Get current bank statements (within 30 days of application), scholarship renewal letters, or updated sponsorship letters.

Step 5: Renew Your Health Insurance

Most insurers allow annual renewal. Ensure the new certificate covers the full extended period.

Step 6: Pay the Modelo 790 Fee

Download Modelo 790 Código 052 from the Spanish Tax Agency website. Pay at any Spanish bank branch. Keep the stamped receipt.

Step 7: Book Your Appointment (Cita Previa)

Go to the Sede Electrónica (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es) → Extranjería → book a cita previa at your local Oficina de Extranjería.

Barcelona note: The Oficina de Extranjería in Barcelona is notoriously busy. Book your appointment as early as possible — slots are often 3–6 weeks out.

Step 8: Submit Documents in Person

Attend your appointment with all originals and copies. Submit documents and receive your resguardo (submission receipt). This document proves your legal stay while the application is processed.

Step 9: Wait for Resolution

Processing time: typically 1–3 months. You will be notified by email or postal letter.

Step 10: Collect New TIE Card

Once approved, you’ll be notified to book an appointment to collect your new TIE card at the local police station (Comisaría).

Costs

ItemCost
Modelo 790 Código 052 (extension fee)~€16.80
Health insurance renewal (annual)€360–960/year
DELE exam (language school track only)€80–180 depending on level
Document translation (if needed)€50–100
Total (approx)€430–1,260/year

What If Your Extension Is Denied?

Denial reasons are stated in writing. Common reasons:

  1. Insufficient academic progress — not attending, no exam participation
  2. Missing or expired documents — medical certificate outdated, insurance expired
  3. Insufficient funds — bank account below required minimum
  4. No DELE/SIELE certificate — language school students who have not passed an exam are not eligible for renewal under RD 1155/2024
  5. Renewal limit reached — language school students who already used their one renewal cannot apply again in this category

Your options after denial:

  • Appeal (recurso de alzada) — within 1 month of denial notice, submitted to the same office
  • Administrative appeal (recurso contencioso-administrativo) — courts; requires a lawyer
  • Leave Spain — if you choose not to appeal or the grounds for denial cannot be corrected

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between visa extension and renewal in Spain?

In Spain's immigration system, both terms refer to the same process: prórroga de estancia por estudios (extension of study stay). You apply to continue your studies each year. There is no separate 'renewal visa' — you extend your existing authorization while staying in Spain.

How many times can I renew a language school student visa in Spain?

Once. Under Royal Decree 1155/2024 (in force since May 20, 2025), language school visas can be renewed a maximum of one time — giving a total of 2 years maximum. To renew, you must have passed a DELE or SIELE exam (no specific level is stated in the law). University and accredited vocational program visas can be renewed for the full duration of the program.

Do I need to pass a DELE exam to renew my Spain student visa?

If you are on a language school visa, yes — since May 2025 (RD 1155/2024) you must have passed a DELE or SIELE exam to be eligible for renewal. The law does not specify which level must be passed. If you are enrolled in a university, FP, or accredited degree program, the DELE/SIELE requirement does not apply.

When should I apply for my student visa extension in Spain?

Apply no earlier than 60 days before your current authorization expires, and no later than 90 days after it expires. The safest window is 30–45 days before expiry.

Can I stay in Spain while my extension application is being processed?

Yes. Submitting a timely application (before or up to 90 days after expiry) automatically extends your legal stay until a decision is made. Keep your submission receipt (resguardo) as proof.

What happens if my student visa extension is denied?

You have the right to appeal (recurso de alzada) within 1 month of the denial. If you don't appeal, you must leave Spain. A denial is usually for missing documents, insufficient academic progress, or — for language school students — not having passed the DELE/SIELE exam.
