2026 Rule Change: Language School vs University Renewal
Royal Decree 1155/2024 (effective May 20, 2025) fundamentally changed renewal rules for language school students. The two visa tracks now have completely different renewal rights — and choosing the wrong track can strand you in Spain without a legal path to stay.
| Language school visa | University / FP visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum renewals | 1 renewal only | Unlimited while enrolled |
| Maximum total stay | 2 years | No ceiling |
| Renewal exam | DELE/SIELE pass required | None |
| Work rights | None | 30h/week automatic |
If you are on a language school visa and this is your first renewal: You can renew once. After this renewal, you cannot renew again under language school status — you must either leave Spain or switch to a university or FP program before the second-year authorization expires.
If you are on a university or FP visa: You can renew every year as long as you remain enrolled. There is no upper limit.
See our University vs Language School Visa comparison and our DELE exam guide for the language school renewal exam requirement.
Who Needs to Renew?
You Need Renewal If:
- ✅ Your student visa/TIE expires within 90 days
- ✅ You’re continuing studies in Spain
- ✅ Your course extends beyond current authorization
- ✅ You’re changing to a new program but staying as student
You Don’t Need Renewal If:
- ❌ Your course ends and you’re leaving Spain
- ❌ You’re switching to a work permit (different process)
- ❌ You’re changing to another visa type
Switching Visa Types?
If you’re transitioning from student visa to work permit, that’s a modification of status (modificación), not a renewal. See our guide on switching from student visa to work permit.
Renewal Requirements
Eight core documents are required for renewal. Financial proof is the most common stumbling point — for renewal, Spanish bank account statements and Spanish employment income both count, which is an advantage over the initial application.
In our experience processing renewals for students in Barcelona, the most frequent reason for delays (not rejections, but delays) is booking the Extranjería appointment too late. Barcelona offices have 2–4 week wait times. Students who wait until 45 days before expiry often find no slots available before their authorization runs out. Book at the 60-day mark, not later.
Documents Checklist
Identity documents:
- Valid passport (must be valid throughout new authorization period)
- Current TIE card (original + copy)
- Passport-sized photo (recent)
Academic documents:
- New acceptance/enrollment letter from school
- Proof of course payment or payment plan
- Academic transcript or progress report (some offices)
Financial documents:
- Bank statements (last 3 months)
- Minimum €700/month × new course duration
- Sponsor letter + their documents (if applicable)
Insurance:
- Health insurance certificate covering new period
- Same requirements as initial visa (€30,000, no co-pay)
Administrative:
- Completed application form (EX-00)
- Fee payment receipt (Modelo 790, código 052)
- Empadronamiento (address registration)
Financial Requirement Details

| New Course Duration | Minimum Funds Required |
|---|---|
| 6 months | €4,200 |
| 9 months | €6,300 |
| 12 months | €8,400 |
Difference from initial application: You can now show Spanish bank account statements, Spanish employment income (if you worked legally), or combination of sources.
See Financial Requirements guide for detailed documentation rules.
Health Insurance for Renewal
Same requirements as initial visa:
- €30,000 minimum coverage
- No co-payments
- Valid for entire new authorization period
- From Spain-authorized provider
Tip: If you’ve been using public healthcare (Seguridad Social), you still need private insurance documentation for renewal.
See Health Insurance guide for compliant providers.
Step-by-Step Renewal Process
The renewal process has 7 steps from document gathering to new TIE card. Budget 3–4 months total. The receipt you get at your appointment is your legal proof of status — keep it accessible at all times while your renewal is pending.
Step 1: Check Your Timeline (90-60 days before expiration)
- Note your TIE expiration date
- Mark calendar for 60 days before
- Begin gathering documents
- Confirm school enrollment for next period
Critical: Never apply after your visa expires. This creates legal complications and may require leaving Spain.
Step 2: Gather Documents (60-30 days before)
- Request new acceptance letter from school
- Get fresh bank statements (within 30 days of application)
- Renew health insurance if expiring
- Update empadronamiento if you moved
- Get passport photos taken
Step 3: Pay the Fee
Modelo 790, Código 052
- Download form from Sede Electrónica
- Fill in your details
- Pay at bank (approximately €16)
- Keep stamped receipt
Step 4: Book Appointment Online
Website: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es
- Select your province
- Choose “Renovación de autorización de estancia por estudios”
- Select available date and time
- Save confirmation
Appointment availability varies by city:
- Barcelona: Often 2-4 weeks wait
- Madrid: 1-3 weeks wait
- Smaller cities: Usually faster
Step 5: Submit Application
At your appointment:
- Bring all original documents + copies
- Arrive 15 minutes early
- Submit application
- Get receipt (resguardo) with application number
The receipt is crucial: It proves your application is pending and allows you to stay legally while waiting.
Step 6: Wait for Resolution (1-3 months)
While waiting:
- Your status is legal (keep receipt as proof)
- You can continue studying
- You can travel within Spain
- Avoid international travel if possible (complications at re-entry)
Track your application:
- Online through Sede Electrónica
- By calling immigration office
- Some offices send SMS updates
Step 7: Collect New TIE
When approved:
- Book appointment for TIE collection/fingerprints
- Pay TIE card fee (Modelo 790, código 012: ~€16)
- Attend appointment with passport
- Receive new TIE card (or collection date)
Renewal Timeline
Recommended schedule:
| Timeframe | Action |
|---|---|
| 90 days before expiry | Start gathering documents |
| 75 days before | Confirm school enrollment |
| 60 days before | Book appointment, pay fees |
| 45-60 days before | Attend appointment |
| 1-3 months later | Receive approval |
| Within 30 days of approval | Collect new TIE |
Common Renewal Issues
Most renewal problems are fixable if caught early. The issues below all have solutions — the key is not waiting until the last few weeks before expiry to discover them.
Problem: Appointment Not Available
Solution:
- Check website daily for cancellations
- Try early morning (new slots often released)
- Consider nearby cities if your province allows
- Apply for appointment well in advance
Problem: Course Gap Between Programs
If there’s a gap between your current course ending and new course starting:
- Gap under 3 months: Usually acceptable with explanation
- Gap over 3 months: May need to justify continued student status
- Solution: Enroll in bridge course or show acceptance for future program
Problem: Changed Schools
Changing schools is allowed if:
- New school is accredited
- Course qualifies (20+ hours/week, in-person)
- You have proper acceptance letter
Provide:
- Completion certificate or transcript from previous school
- New acceptance letter
- Explanation of change (cover letter)
Problem: Financial Proof Issues
If you’ve been working in Spain:
- Show Spanish bank statements
- Include work contract and payslips
- Can combine work income + savings + sponsor
If finances are tight:
- Add family sponsor
- Show scholarship if applicable
- Demonstrate additional income sources
Problem: Academic Struggles
If you’ve had academic difficulties:
- Still enrolled = can still renew
- Provide explanation if grades are very poor
- Show commitment to completing studies
- Consider whether study plan needs adjustment
Travel During Renewal
While Application is Pending
Within Spain: No restrictions
Schengen area (EU): Technically possible with valid TIE + receipt, but risky. Some border agents may question expired TIE even with renewal receipt.
Outside Schengen: Not recommended. Re-entry can be problematic with pending renewal.
Best practice: Avoid international travel while renewal is pending. If absolutely necessary, carry:
- Passport
- Expired TIE
- Renewal application receipt
- School enrollment proof
After Renewal Approved
Once you have your new TIE:
- Travel freely within Schengen (90/180 day rule)
- Re-enter Spain without issues
- TIE serves as residence proof
Renewal Fees
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Application fee (Tasa 790-052) | ~€16 |
| TIE card fee (Tasa 790-012) | ~€16 |
| Total | ~€32 |
Additional costs to budget:
- Passport photos: €5-10
- Updated health insurance: €40-80/month
- Document copies: €5-10
- School enrollment: Varies
After Renewal: What’s Next?
Once your renewal is approved and your new TIE is in hand, your options depend on whether you are on a language school or university/FP track. Language school students on their first renewal should be planning their next move now — this is the last renewal you can get on this visa type.
Your New Authorization Allows:
- Continue studying at accredited institution
- Work up to 30 hours/week (with authorization)
- Travel within Schengen (90/180 days)
- Access Spanish services with TIE
Future Options:
Continue as student: Renew again before next expiration
Transition to work: After studies, you can apply to modify status. See Student to Work Permit guide.
Long-term residence: After 5 years legal residence, you may qualify for long-term residence permit.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I apply for student visa renewal?
Apply 60 days before your current authorization expires. You can apply up to 90 days before expiration. Never let your visa expire before applying—this creates serious legal problems.
Can I renew my student visa while outside Spain?
No. Renewals must be done from within Spain at the immigration office (Extranjería). If you leave and your visa expires, you'll need to apply for a new visa from your home country.
How long does the renewal process take?
Typically 1-3 months. While your application is pending, you can legally stay in Spain even if your TIE expires—keep the renewal receipt as proof.
Can I renew if I changed schools?
Yes, as long as your new school is accredited and you're continuing studies. You'll need a new acceptance letter and proof of enrollment.
What if I failed some courses?
You can still renew if you're continuing studies, but immigration may ask for explanation of academic progress. Consistent failures may raise concerns about genuine student intent.
Can I renew indefinitely as a student?
It depends on your visa type. University and FP students can renew unlimited times while enrolled — there is no ceiling. Language school students under RD 1155/2024 are limited to ONE renewal only. That means a maximum 2-year total stay on a language school visa. If you want to stay longer, you must switch to a university or FP program before your renewal expires.
