Why Ukrainians Choose Spain

Spain has become one of the most popular European destinations for Ukrainian students:

  • Spain has a large Ukrainian community — particularly since 2022, Spain has welcomed a significant Ukrainian population
  • Mediterranean climate — warm, sunny, very different from Eastern European winters
  • Affordable compared to Western Europe — Barcelona and Madrid are significantly cheaper than London, Paris, or Amsterdam
  • Spanish universities are internationally ranked — degrees recognised across the EU
  • Pathway to EU residency — studying in Spain can lead to long-term residency and eventual citizenship
  • Access from anywhere — if you are currently displaced in an EU country, you can apply at the Spanish consulate there

Where to Apply

Ukrainian citizens apply at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in the country where they currently reside legally:

SituationWhere to apply
Currently in UkraineSpanish Embassy Kyiv (Tarasa Shevchenka Blvd 4A)
Displaced in PolandSpanish Consulate Warsaw or Kraków
Displaced in GermanySpanish Consulate in your German city of residence
Displaced in FranceSpanish Consulate in your French city of residence
In Georgia / ArmeniaSpanish Embassy Tbilisi or Yerevan

Important: You apply based on your place of legal residence, not your place of birth. The Spanish consulate in your current country processes your application.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Enrol at a Spanish institution

Secure acceptance from an accredited Spanish school or university. Your acceptance letter must state program name, start and end dates, weekly hours, and confirmation of enrolment.

Step 2: Obtain your criminal record

The standard criminal record document is an extract from the Unified State Register of Convicted Persons (Єдиний реєстр засуджених осіб), issued by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. This can be requested:

  • Online through the Ministry of Justice portal (у Дія або через портал МЮУ)
  • At Ukrainian consular offices abroad if you are outside Ukraine

Some Spanish consulates also accept the police clearance from the National Police of Ukraine. Confirm with your specific consulate which document they prefer.

Step 3: Apostille the criminal record

The document must be apostilled by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine (or Ukrainian consulate abroad). If applying from outside Ukraine, your local Ukrainian consulate may be able to facilitate apostille. Allow 2–4 weeks for this step.

Step 4: Get sworn translations

All Ukrainian-language documents must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator (traductor jurado) in the country where you are applying. This includes your criminal record, any diplomas or certificates, and any other Ukrainian-language document in your application.

Costs: €40–80 per document depending on length.

Step 5: Book your consulate appointment

Contact the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence. In peak season, appointments can take 2–4 weeks.

Step 6: Attend your appointment and submit documents

Bring all originals, copies, and translations. Biometrics may be taken.

Step 7: Wait for processing

Processing takes 4–6 weeks from submission.

Step 8: Collect your visa and travel

Once approved, collect your passport with the visa stamp.

Step 9: Apply for TIE card after arrival

If staying 6+ months, apply for your TIE card within 30 days of arriving in Spain.

Document Checklist

  • Visa application form (EX-00) — completed in Spanish, signed, no corrections
  • Valid passport — minimum 12 months validity, at least 2 blank pages; original + copies of all pages
  • 2 passport photos — colour, white background, 35×45mm
  • Official acceptance letter from your Spanish institution
  • Proof of tuition payment
  • Financial means — see section below

  • Criminal record (Ministry of Justice extract) — apostilled + sworn Spanish translation
  • Proof of accommodation in Spain

Translation requirements

All Ukrainian-language documents must be translated by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado) in the country where you apply. Translation must be:

  • Stamped and signed by the sworn translator
  • In standard Spanish (Castilian)
  • Complete — no summary versions

Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate €600 per month for the full duration of your course.

Health Insurance

Your policy must:

  • Provide minimum €30,000 coverage in Spain

Common Mistakes Ukrainian Applicants Make

1. Using UAH-only bank statements Consulates prefer EUR or USD statements for financial proof. UAH balances are accepted but require conversion at current rates, which may not reflect stable purchasing power. Supplement with any EUR/USD accounts you hold.

2. Not confirming which consulate has jurisdiction If you are displaced in another country, you must apply at the Spanish consulate in that specific country or city based on your residence address — not at the consulate nearest to where you happen to be temporarily.

3. Forgetting sworn translation This is the most common missed step. All Ukrainian documents must be translated by a certified sworn translator in your country of application. Standard commercial translations are not accepted.

4. Starting too late With criminal record, apostille, translations, appointment, and processing, the realistic minimum is 12–14 weeks. Start 3 months before your course.

5. Insurance with a co-payment Strictly rejected. Confirm “no co-payment” explicitly in your insurance documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ukrainians apply for a Spain student visa from outside Ukraine?

Yes. Ukrainians who are currently abroad (in another EU country, Georgia, Poland, Germany, etc.) can apply for the Spain student visa at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in the country where they currently reside legally. You apply based on your place of legal residence, not your nationality. If you are a temporary protection holder in an EU country, check with the local Spanish consulate about which documents they require.

Do Ukrainian documents need to be translated into Spanish?

Yes. Ukrainian documents (passport, criminal record, university certificates) must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. The translation must be done by a translator officially certified in the country where you are applying. This is different from LatAm applicants whose documents are already in Spanish.

How long does Spain student visa processing take from Ukraine?

Allow 2–3 months: 2–3 weeks for criminal record and apostille, 1–2 weeks for sworn translations, 1–3 weeks for a consulate appointment, and 4–6 weeks for consulate processing. Start at least 3 months before your course begins.

What is the criminal record requirement for Ukrainian applicants?

You need an extract from the Unified State Register of Convicted Persons, issued by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. If you are outside Ukraine, you can request it through the Ministry of Justice online portal or via a Ukrainian consulate. The document must be apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

Can I study in Spain if I have temporary protection (displacement) status in the EU?

Temporary protection status in an EU country generally does not transfer to Spain automatically. If you are a temporary protection holder in Germany, Poland, etc. and want to study in Spain, you would typically need to apply for a Spanish student visa at the Spanish consulate in your current EU residence country. Consult with the relevant Spanish consulate about your specific situation.

How much money do I need for a Spain student visa from Ukraine?

€600 per month for the full duration of your course. EUR or USD bank statements are strongly recommended over UAH-only statements, as they demonstrate more stable financial means. Sponsorship letters from family with stable EUR/USD savings are also accepted.
