DELE Exam for Spain Student Visa Renewal: Complete Guide 2026

Why the DELE or SIELE Exam Matters Now

Since May 20, 2025, the rules for renewing a Spain language school student visa changed fundamentally. Under article 55.5 of Royal Decree 1155/2024, a language-course student applying for the extension (prórroga) of their stay must show one of the following:

• a DELE diploma (any level)
• proof of registration for a DELE exam
• a SIELE diploma
• or, for students of an Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, that they passed the course they were enrolled in

The official text, from the consolidated BOE version of the regulation:

“…se requerirá que la persona solicitante haya superado el curso en el que estuviera matriculado en el caso de las Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas o, en los demás casos, que haya obtenido uno de los diplomas de español como lengua extranjera (DELE) […] o haya realizado la inscripción para realizar la prueba conducente al mismo o haya obtenido un diploma del Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española.”

This is not optional, but it is lighter than many guides claim. For the DELE, registering for the exam is enough. You do not have to wait for a pass before you file.

Language-course students get one extension per authorisation, of up to one year (art. 55.5).

If you arrived in Spain on a language school student visa in 2025 or later, your renewal window is likely in 2026, which means now is the time to plan and register for the exam.

What Are DELE and SIELE?

DELE — Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera

DELE is the official Spanish language certification issued by Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish government’s international Spanish language authority. It is recognised globally as the standard proof of Spanish language proficiency for professional, academic, and immigration purposes.

DELE exams are offered at six levels aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):

Pass/fail structure: DELE is binary: you register for a specific level and either pass or fail that level. Partial credit is not given across levels.

SIELE — Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española

SIELE is a Spanish language certification issued jointly by:

• UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)
• Universidad de Salamanca (Spain)
• Instituto Cervantes (Spain)

Unlike DELE, SIELE does not use fixed pass/fail levels. Instead, it gives a global score out of 1000 across four skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking). Score bands roughly correspond to CEFR levels.

SIELE modalities:

• SIELE Global: all four skills, full score (most common)
• SIELE por destreza: individual skill modules (useful if you have already demonstrated some skills)

For the extension, both are accepted, but not on the same terms. For the DELE, proof that you have registered for an exam is enough. For the SIELE, article 55.5 asks for the diploma, so you need to have sat the exam and received it before you file. If you are short of time, a DELE registration is usually the simpler route.

Exam Dates in Barcelona and Madrid

DELE Exam Sessions (Barcelona)

DELE exams in Barcelona are administered at Instituto Cervantes Barcelona and at designated exam centres (including some language schools). Typical sessions:

SIELE Exam Sessions (Barcelona)

SIELE is offered at authorised SIELE centres, including some language schools in Barcelona. Computer-based SIELE exams can be offered more flexibly than DELE; check with authorised centres for available dates.

Registration: Via siele.org. Computer-based tests may have shorter lead times than DELE.

Timing: What You Need on the Day You File

The extension is filed during the two months before your authorisation expires (art. 55.3). What you need in hand on that day depends on the route:

Example scenario:

• Your language-course authorisation expires: September 30, 2026
• Your filing window: July 30 to September 30, 2026 (the two months before expiry)
• With DELE: register for any upcoming session before you file, and attach the registration receipt
• With SIELE: sit the exam early enough to have the diploma by the time you file

Do not leave registration to the last week. DELE registration closes several weeks before each session, and seats can run out. Book as soon as you know your expiry date.

Preparation Timeline

If you have 12 months before your renewal

This is the ideal scenario. Your preparation should look like:

If you have less than 6 months

• Register for the next DELE session you can realistically prepare for: the registration receipt already meets the condition
• If you prefer the SIELE, book it early enough to have the diploma before your filing window opens
• Increase your study hours and consider private tutoring alongside group classes

What Happens If You Fail?

Article 55.5 does not make the extension depend on passing:

1. DELE route: the text asks that you have obtained a DELE diploma or registered for the exam. It says nothing about the result. You can also re-sit at the next session.
2. SIELE route: the text asks for the SIELE diploma, so you need to have sat the exam and received it.
3. Escuela Oficial de Idiomas: the condition is that you passed the course you were enrolled in.

The extension is still decided by the immigration office, which checks every other requirement too: enrolment, means, insurance. Do not treat the exam as the only box to tick.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Registering too late for the exam session Registration for DELE closes 6–8 weeks before the exam. If you miss the registration deadline, you must wait for the next session, which could push you past your visa renewal deadline.

2. Waiting for a DELE result you do not need For the DELE, the law asks for registration, not a result. Students who hold off filing until results arrive (DELE results take months) risk missing the two-month filing window.

3. Confusing DELE with a school’s internal exam Your language school may offer internal tests, mock exams, or certificates of attendance. These are not DELE or SIELE exams and do not satisfy the RD 1155/2024 requirement.

4. Not checking which level to register for The decree does not specify a required level. Still, choose one that matches your Spanish: the diploma is useful well beyond the visa, and sitting DELE C1 at A2 level wastes the fee. Take an honest assessment of your Spanish before registering.

5. Waiting until month 11 to think about the exam By then the registration for the nearest session may be closed, and a SIELE diploma may not arrive before your filing window ends.
