Why the DELE or SIELE Exam Matters Now
Since May 20, 2025, the rules for renewing a Spain language school student visa changed fundamentally. Under Royal Decree 1155/2024, anyone applying to renew their language school student residence permit for a second year must demonstrate that they have passed a DELE or SIELE Spanish language examination.
This is not optional. Without evidence of having passed one of these exams, a language school student visa renewal application will not meet the legal requirements.
If you arrived in Spain on a language school student visa in 2025 or later, your renewal window is likely in 2026 — which means now is the time to plan and register for the exam.
What Are DELE and SIELE?
DELE — Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera
DELE is the official Spanish language certification issued by Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish government’s international Spanish language authority. It is recognised globally as the standard proof of Spanish language proficiency for professional, academic, and immigration purposes.
DELE exams are offered at six levels aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
| Level | CEFR | Description |
|---|---|---|
| DELE A1 | A1 | Beginner — very basic interactions |
| DELE A2 | A2 | Elementary — simple everyday communication |
| DELE B1 | B1 | Intermediate — independent user |
| DELE B2 | B2 | Upper-intermediate — fluent in most situations |
| DELE C1 | C1 | Advanced — complex language use |
| DELE C2 | C2 | Mastery — near-native level |
Pass/fail structure: DELE is binary — you register for a specific level and either pass or fail that level. Partial credit is not given across levels.
SIELE — Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española
SIELE is a Spanish language certification issued jointly by:
- UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)
- Universidad de Salamanca (Spain)
- Instituto Cervantes (Spain)
Unlike DELE, SIELE does not use fixed pass/fail levels. Instead, it gives a global score out of 1000 across four skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking). Score bands roughly correspond to CEFR levels.
SIELE modalities:
- SIELE Global — all four skills, full score (most common)
- SIELE por destreza — individual skill modules (useful if you have already demonstrated some skills)
DELE vs SIELE: Which Should You Choose?
| Factor | DELE | SIELE |
|---|---|---|
| Issuing authority | Instituto Cervantes | UNAM + U. Salamanca + I. Cervantes |
| Structure | Level-specific (pass/fail) | Score-based (out of 1000) |
| Exam frequency | 3–5 sessions/year | More frequent, including computer-based |
| Results timeline | 3–4 months | 3–4 weeks (digital) |
| Recognition in Spain | Universal | Widely accepted |
| Best for | Students who want a clear level credential | Students who want faster results or flexibility |
For visa renewal purposes, both are accepted. If you want results faster, SIELE’s digital format gives results in 3–4 weeks rather than DELE’s 3–4 months — this is a significant practical advantage when timing a visa renewal.
Exam Dates in Barcelona and Madrid
DELE Exam Sessions (Barcelona)
DELE exams in Barcelona are administered at Instituto Cervantes Barcelona and at designated exam centres (including some language schools). Typical sessions:
| Session | Registration opens | Exam month |
|---|---|---|
| Session 1 | October–November | November |
| Session 2 | January–February | March |
| Session 3 | March–April | May |
Additional sessions may be offered in August for some levels. Check the Instituto Cervantes website for the current year’s calendar — dates shift slightly year to year.
Registration: Via the Instituto Cervantes website. Registration closes approximately 6–8 weeks before the exam date. Late registration is not accepted.
SIELE Exam Sessions (Barcelona)
SIELE is offered at authorised SIELE centres, including some language schools in Barcelona. Computer-based SIELE exams can be offered more flexibly than DELE — check with authorised centres for available dates.
Registration: Via siele.org. Computer-based tests may have shorter lead times than DELE.
Costs
| Exam | Level | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|---|
| DELE A2 | A2 | €80–100 |
| DELE B1 | B1 | €100–130 |
| DELE B2 | B2 | €130–170 |
| DELE C1 | C1 | €150–180 |
| SIELE Global | All skills | €130–155 |
Prices vary by exam centre. Some language schools include a DELE exam fee in their enrollment packages — check before paying separately.
Results Timeline: Critical for Visa Renewal
This is where most students run into trouble.
| Exam | Time from exam to results |
|---|---|
| DELE | 3–4 months |
| SIELE (digital) | 3–4 weeks |
Example scenario:
- Your initial language school visa expires: September 30, 2026
- You must submit your renewal application: at least 1 month before expiry → by August 31
- You need exam results by: late August 2026
- With DELE: you must sit the exam by May 2026 (results arrive in September — too late if sitting in May, you may need the March session)
- With SIELE: you could sit as late as August 2026 and still have results in time
Plan your exam session immediately after enrolling — do not assume you can sit any session near your visa renewal date. DELE results in particular arrive much later than most students expect.
Preparation Timeline
If you have 12 months before your renewal
This is the ideal scenario. Your preparation should look like:
| Months 1–3 | Intensive Spanish at your language school (20+ hours/week) | | Month 3–4 | Placement test / internal assessment — know your current level | | Month 4–6 | Focused preparation for the exam level (grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking) | | Month 7 | Register for exam session (November or March in Barcelona) | | Month 8–9 | Sit the exam | | Month 10–12 | Receive results; submit visa renewal with results certificate |
If you have less than 6 months
- Prioritise SIELE over DELE for faster results
- Increase your study hours immediately
- Consider private tutoring alongside group classes
- Register for the earliest available exam session
What Happens If You Fail?
If you fail the DELE or SIELE exam:
- You can re-sit — both exams allow you to register for the next session. DELE requires waiting for the next official session (2–4 months). SIELE computer-based tests have shorter waiting periods.
- You cannot renew your visa without a passed exam — a failed result does not satisfy the RD 1155/2024 requirement.
- Your options: sit again before your visa expires (only possible if time allows), leave Spain when your initial visa expires, or — if eligible — transition to a different visa type (university student visa, work permit, etc.).
Start early. Failing and re-sitting is possible, but the DELE exam calendar leaves little room for error if your visa expiry is approaching.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Registering too late for the exam session Registration for DELE closes 6–8 weeks before the exam. If you miss the registration deadline, you must wait for the next session — which could push you past your visa renewal deadline.
2. Expecting fast DELE results DELE results take 3–4 months. Students who sit in May expecting results in July will be disappointed — they typically arrive in August or September. Plan for this.
3. Confusing DELE with a school’s internal exam Your language school may offer internal tests, mock exams, or certificates of attendance. These are not DELE or SIELE exams and do not satisfy the RD 1155/2024 requirement.
4. Not checking which level to register for The decree does not specify a required level, but choosing an appropriate level for your current ability improves your chances of passing. Sitting DELE C1 when you are genuinely at A2 level is a guaranteed failure. Take an honest assessment of your Spanish before registering.
5. Waiting until month 11 to think about the exam By the time you realise you need to sit an exam, the session may have passed, the registration may be closed, or there may not be enough time to receive results before your renewal application.
How Your Language School Can Help
Accredited language schools in Barcelona are generally familiar with the DELE and SIELE process. Ask your school:
- Whether your current program prepares you for a specific DELE level
- Whether the school is a designated DELE exam centre (meaning you can sit the exam at your school)
- Whether exam preparation classes are included in or available alongside your standard program
- What your current level is and what level is realistic to target

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a DELE or SIELE exam to renew my Spain student visa?
Yes — if you are a language school student applying for a second-year renewal of your Spain student residence permit (TIE), Royal Decree 1155/2024 requires that you have passed a DELE or SIELE examination. This requirement applies to renewals submitted after May 20, 2025.
What level of DELE or SIELE do I need for visa renewal?
The text of RD 1155/2024 requires that you have passed a DELE or SIELE exam but does not specify a minimum level. Confirm the current administrative interpretation with the Spanish consulate or immigration office processing your renewal before registering.
When should I register for the DELE or SIELE exam?
Register during the first few months of your initial study year. Exam sessions in Barcelona typically run in November, March, and May. Results take 3–4 months after the exam. If your visa expires in September, you need exam results by August — which means sitting the exam no later than the March session.
What is the difference between DELE and SIELE?
DELE is issued by Instituto Cervantes and has fixed levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) — you pass or fail at one specific level. SIELE is issued jointly by UNAM, Universidad de Salamanca, and Instituto Cervantes — it gives a score across skills rather than a fixed pass/fail at a single level. Both are accepted official Spanish language exams.
Can university students also use DELE/SIELE for renewal?
University student visa renewals are governed by different rules and do not require a DELE or SIELE exam. The exam requirement under RD 1155/2024 applies specifically to language school student visa renewals.
