Why Georgians Choose Spain

Georgia and Spain share a deep appreciation for food culture, wine, and hospitality — and Georgian students are increasingly discovering Spain’s language schools and universities:

  • Visa-free Schengen access — Georgian citizens with biometric passports can enter Spain without a visa for stays up to 90 days, making the initial arrival simple
  • Mediterranean climate — warm, sunny, welcoming — familiar to those from the Caucasus
  • Affordable European education — Spanish tuition and living costs are significantly lower than Western Europe
  • Spanish universities internationally recognised — degrees valid across the EU
  • Pathway to EU residency — a student visa can lead to a work permit and long-term residency
  • Wine culture connection — Georgia and Spain are both ancient wine civilisations; the cultural affinity is genuine

Where to Apply in Georgia

OfficeLocation
Spanish EmbassyKostava 44, Tbilisi

All student visa applications are processed at the Spanish Embassy in Tbilisi. There is no consulate in other Georgian cities.

For third-country nationals resident in Georgia: The Spanish Embassy in Tbilisi may also process applications from nationals of other CIS countries (Russia, Belarus, etc.) who hold a valid Georgian residence permit. Policies vary — contact the embassy directly for the latest requirements.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Enrol at a Spanish institution

Secure acceptance from an accredited Spanish school or university. The acceptance letter must state the program name, start and end dates, weekly hours, and confirmation of enrolment.

Step 2: Obtain your criminal record and apostille

The criminal record is issued by the National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR) — the public services agency under the Ministry of Justice of Georgia. You can apply:

  • In person at any NAPR Justice House (სახლი)
  • Online at napr.gov.ge

Processing: express service (same day) or standard (1–3 days). The document must then be apostilled by the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.

Step 3: Get sworn translations

All Georgian-language documents (and any Russian-language documents) must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado). Sworn Spanish translators are available in Tbilisi.

Step 4: Book your consulate appointment

Contact the Spanish Embassy in Tbilisi. Book early — appointments can take 2–3 weeks in peak season.

Step 5: Attend your appointment

Bring all originals, copies, and sworn translations. Documents are submitted; biometrics may be taken.

Step 6: Wait for processing

Processing takes 4–6 weeks from submission.

Step 7: Collect your visa and travel

Once approved, collect your passport and book your flights.

Step 8: Apply for TIE card after arrival

If staying 6+ months, apply for your TIE card within 30 days of arriving in Spain.

Common Mistakes Georgian Applicants Make

1. Assuming visa-free access covers programs over 90 days Visa-free Schengen access only covers stays up to 90 days. For any language course or university program exceeding 90 days, the Type D student visa is mandatory — even though you can enter Spain visa-free.

2. Missing sworn translation Georgian-language documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified sworn translator. This is not optional.

3. Not apostilling the NAPR certificate Obtaining the certificate and getting it apostilled are separate steps. Both are required before your consulate appointment.

4. Starting too late Criminal record + apostille + translation + appointment + processing = minimum 10–12 weeks. Start 3 months before your course.

5. Insurance with a co-payment Strictly rejected by the consulate. Confirm “no co-payment” in writing before purchasing.
