Spain’s Formación Profesional is the best-kept secret in international education. Public FP programs are free, give you the same work rights as university students, include mandatory paid internships from year one, and have a 40%+ direct employment rate after graduation. Most guides for international students don’t mention FP at all. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Formación Profesional?

Formación Profesional (FP) is Spain’s vocational training system — the equivalent of vocational qualifications in the UK, BTEC/HND, German Ausbildung, or French BTS. It sits within the higher education framework under the Ministry of Education.

FP is not a university degree, but it is classified as official higher education under Spanish law — which is why FP students get university-equivalent visa terms, including the right to work.

There are two levels:

LevelSpanish nameEquivalentDurationEntry requirement
IntermediateCiclo Formativo Grado Medio (CFGM)Level 3 / HNC2 yearsESO (secondary school) or equivalent
AdvancedCiclo Formativo Grado Superior (CFGS)Level 5 / HND2 yearsBachillerato or equivalent

For most international students, Grado Superior is the relevant level. It leads to the Técnico Superior title and provides a solid professional qualification recognised across Spain and the EU.

The combination of free tuition + work rights + high employment rate makes FP the most financially rational choice for students who:

  • Have B1–B2 Spanish (or are willing to reach it)
  • Want to stay in Spain long-term
  • Need part-time income while studying
  • Want a hands-on professional qualification rather than a theoretical degree

Information Technology

Spain’s tech sector — concentrated in Barcelona and Madrid — specifically recruits FP graduates. IT FP programs are consistently oversubscribed.

Enrollment Process for International Students

Step 1: Check your Spanish level

Most public FP programs are taught in Spanish. Minimum B1 is the practical threshold; B2 is comfortable. If you’re at A2–B1, consider 6–12 months at a language school first, then apply for FP.

Some private FP providers and international FP centers offer English-taught or bilingual tracks — particularly in IT and business fields. These are viable for students with lower Spanish levels but come with tuition costs.

Step 2: Get your qualifications recognised

To apply for Grado Superior, Spanish authorities need to confirm your foreign Bachillerato-equivalent is accepted. Two options:

Academic equivalence (equivalencia de nivel): Confirms your foreign qualification is equivalent to Spanish Bachillerato in terms of level. Required for FP enrollment. Issued by the regional education authority. Faster than full homologation.

Direct access: Some nationalities can access Grado Superior via entrance exams (prueba de acceso a ciclos formativos de grado superior) without needing prior qualification recognition. Check with the specific center.

Timeline: Start the recognition process at least 6 months before your target September enrollment.

Step 3: Apply to a center

Public FP centers (free tuition): Apply through the regional education authority’s online pre-enrollment system. In Catalonia (Barcelona), this is managed by the Departament d’Educació. Applications typically open in June for September enrollment.

Competition for places: Popular programs at public centers (especially IT tracks in Barcelona) are competitive. Submit your application as early as the system allows.

Private FP centers: Open enrollment, no regional competition system. You apply directly to the center. Higher cost but more places and sometimes more flexible start dates.

Step 4: Apply for your student visa

Once you have an acceptance letter from a Spanish FP center, you apply for a long-term student visa (visado de estudios) at the Spanish consulate in your home country. The process is identical to applying for a university student visa.

Required documents include:

  • Acceptance letter from the FP center
  • Proof of financial means (€600/month × visa duration)
  • Medical certificate (required since May 2025)
  • Health insurance covering the full visa period
  • Police certificate / criminal record
  • Passport photos

See our Spain Student Visa Documents checklist for the complete list.

FP Student Visa: Key Terms

Because FP is classified as higher education under Spanish law:

  • Visa duration: Covers your full FP enrollment period — 2 years for Grado Superior
  • Renewals: Unlimited while enrolled — if you complete Grado Medio and continue to Grado Superior, your visa can renew again
  • Work rights: Automatic 30 hours per week, employee or self-employed — built into your TIE card, no extra permit
  • No DELE/SIELE requirement for renewal: Unlike language school students, FP students do not need a language exam to renew
  • Path after graduation: Eligible for the job-seeker visa (up to 12 months to find employment after completing FP)

Barcelona FP Centers: Where to Study

Public Centers (Free)

INS Escola del Treball (Carrer Comte d’Urgell, 187) One of Barcelona’s most prestigious public FP centers. Strong IT, business, and design tracks. High demand — apply early.

INS Pau Claris (Carrer Pau Claris, 81) Central Barcelona. Strong hospitality, tourism, and culinary programs.

INS Icària (Carrer del Pallars, 85 — Poblenou/22@ area) IT-focused center in Barcelona’s tech district. DAM and DAW programs have direct industry links.

INS Lluís Braille (Carrer del Consell de Cent, 361) Healthcare and social care programs.

Public Centers with International Programs

CIFP Institut Escola del Treball has developed some bilingual FP tracks under EU-funded initiatives. Check current program availability at the Departament d’Educació website.

Private FP Centers (Paid — More Accessible for International Students)

Private centers offer easier access, English-taught options, and flexible scheduling. Costs typically €2,000–5,000 per year.

Notable private FP providers in Barcelona with international student experience:

  • Fundació Escola del Treball de Catalunya — adult professional programs
  • SEAS Estudios Superiores Abiertos — distance-learning FP (useful for students who need flexibility)
  • Various private institutions in the Eixample and Gràcia neighborhoods

After FP: Your Options in Spain

Job-seeker visa

FP Grado Superior graduates — like university graduates — qualify for the visa de búsqueda de empleo (job-seeker visa). This allows you to remain in Spain for up to 12 months after graduation to find a job.

Requirements: Completed FP Grado Superior or equivalent (minimum 3-year program also qualifies), application submitted before your student permit expires.

Work permit conversion

If you receive a job offer while on the job-seeker visa, your employer applies for a work permit on your behalf. The student period you spent in Spain counts towards long-term residency (5 years of legal residence → long-term resident permit).

Further FP or university enrollment

FP Grado Superior holders can apply directly to Spanish universities without an entrance exam (they receive acceso directo to related degree programs). Some students use FP as an affordable route to later university enrollment.

The Language School to FP Pathway

The most common international student trajectory in Barcelona:

  1. Arrive at A2–B1 Spanish — enrol at a language school
  2. Spend 1–2 semesters reaching B2 — complete DELE B2 (useful credential anyway)
  3. Apply to public FP Grado Superior — free, with 30h/week work rights
  4. Complete 2-year program while working part-time — legally, with employer tax contributions building your social security record
  5. Graduate → job-seeker visa → work permit — full legal residency pathway

This 3–4 year journey from first arrival to work permit is one of the most realistic routes to long-term legal residency in Spain for non-EU students from outside the EU/Iberoamerican treaty countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Formación Profesional really free for non-EU international students in Spain?

Yes. Public FP centers (centros públicos integrados de FP) charge zero tuition for all students — EU and non-EU alike. Private FP centers charge €2,000–5,000 per year. The free option is available at the same public institutions where Spanish students study.

Do FP students in Spain have the right to work?

Yes. Under Royal Decree 1155/2024, FP students are classified as higher education students. Their residence permit includes automatic work authorisation of up to 30 hours per week — employee or self-employed. No separate work permit application is needed.

What Spanish level do I need to enrol in FP?

Most public FP programs are taught in Spanish and require a minimum of B1–B2 Spanish. Some private FP providers and international FP programs offer English-taught options. Barcelona has a growing number of FP programs with bilingual (Spanish/English) tracks, particularly in IT and business.

What is the difference between Grado Medio and Grado Superior in FP?

Grado Medio (CFGM) is the intermediate level — equivalent to a Level 3 qualification. It leads to the Técnico title and requires ESO (secondary school) as the entry requirement. Grado Superior (CFGS) is the advanced level — equivalent to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma. It leads to the Técnico Superior title and requires Bachillerato or equivalent. For most international students seeking professional qualifications, Grado Superior is the relevant level.

Does an FP qualification allow me to stay in Spain after graduating?

Yes. FP Grado Superior graduates qualify for the job-seeker visa (visa de búsqueda de empleo) after graduation — the same pathway as university graduates. This allows you to remain in Spain for up to 12 months to find employment, then convert to a work permit if you receive a job offer.

Can I transfer my foreign qualifications to enter a Grado Superior program?

Yes — you need an academic equivalence (equivalencia de nivel académico) from the Spanish Ministry of Education showing your foreign qualification is equivalent to Bachillerato. This is different from full degree homologation. The process takes 3–6 months, so apply well before your planned September enrollment.
