Saudi-specific documents

Saudi Police Clearance (Criminal Record)

  • Issued through the Ministry of Interior or ABSHER platform
  • Must be authenticated: typically via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Spanish Embassy
  • Allow 2–4 weeks for the authentication chain

Bank statements:

  • Al Rajhi Bank, Saudi National Bank (SNB), Riyad Bank, and other major Saudi banks all accepted
  • Statements must be official (bank-stamped or official app export)
  • If primarily Arabic: attach an unofficial English translation for clarity (full certified translation rarely required, but helps)
  • Alternative: Wise EUR account statements — professional format, English, accepted by the embassy

Financial documentation for Saudi applicants

The €600/month rule

The consulate requires you to demonstrate €600 per month for each month of your course. For a 6-month course: €3,600 total.

Common approach for Saudi students

Many Saudi students are sponsored by family. The consulate accepts:

  1. Student’s own bank account — 6 months of statements showing adequate balance
  2. Parental sponsorship — Parents’ bank statements + a notarized sponsorship letter (in English or Spanish)
  3. Government scholarship — Award letter from KASP (King Abdullah Scholarship Program) or other scholarship bodies

KASP students: If you have a government scholarship, the scholarship authorization letter itself is your financial proof. Attach the original scholarship letter showing the monthly stipend and coverage period.

Health insurance

Standard Spain student visa requirement: zero co-payments, €30,000+ medical coverage, valid for full stay.

Saudi-issued health insurance (CCHI-regulated insurers) is not authorized to operate as health insurance in Spain. You need an internationally-recognized policy.

For Saudi applicants: Cigna Global is purchasable from Saudi Arabia (online application), covers Spain, zero co-payments, accepted at the Spanish Embassy Riyadh.

Apostille and document authentication

Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Convention (apostille) in 2012. Spanish embassies accept apostilled Saudi documents.

Saudi apostille process:

  1. Get the original document (criminal clearance, etc.)
  2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) authentication — available through MOFA online portal
  3. MOFA issues an apostille sticker/certificate

MOFA apostille: Usually 3–5 business days via the online system. Walk-in service also available at MOFA offices in Riyadh, Jeddah, and other regions.

Step-by-step timeline for Saudi applicants

4–5 months before course start:

  • Open a Wise EUR account — start building 6 months of financial history
  • Check passport validity; renew if less than 18 months remaining
  • Request criminal clearance from ABSHER/Ministry of Interior

3 months before:

  • Enroll in Spanish school; get enrollment letter
  • Book consulate appointment (cita previa) immediately after enrollment
  • Purchase health insurance (Cigna Global)
  • Begin MOFA authentication of criminal clearance

6–8 weeks before:

  • Confirm all documents are complete and translations are ready
  • Prepare financial proof documents — get official bank-stamped statements
  • Prepare sponsorship letter if applicable (notarized)

2–3 weeks before:

  • Print all documents + make copies
  • Prepare visa fee payment (approximately €80 equivalent)

Appointment day:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early with all documents
  • Interview may be brief or not happen at all — just document verification

After approval: before flying to Spain

  1. Connectivity: Order a Holafly eSIM before departure — activates automatically at Barcelona or Madrid airport. STC, Mobily, and Zain international roaming to Spain is expensive.

  2. Airport transfer: Welcome Pickups meets you in arrivals — easier than figuring out transport with heavy luggage on your first day.

  3. First 30 days in Spain:

    • Register at the town hall (empadronamiento)
    • Apply for TIE card at the Extranjería within 30 days
    • Get a Spanish phone number (Lycamobile works with passport only)

Living in Spain as a Saudi student

Prayer: Mosques exist in Barcelona and Madrid (the Tariq ibn Ziyad mosque in Madrid is the largest in Spain). Prayer rooms are available at many Spanish universities. Halal food is widely available in both cities.

Climate: Barcelona’s Mediterranean climate will feel familiar — warm, sunny, and manageable. Madrid’s summer heat (40°C+) may be more intense than expected.

Language: Arabic is not widely spoken in Spain outside of tourist areas. English is increasingly common in Barcelona especially, but Spanish is essential for daily life. Students frequently tell us that the language school experience in Spain is faster than expected because full immersion is unavoidable.
