The UAE has a large Spanish-studying community — both UAE nationals studying Spanish as a third or fourth language, and expats based in Dubai/Abu Dhabi applying from their UAE residence. Here’s the complete guide.

Where to apply from UAE

Spanish Embassy — Abu Dhabi Khalidiyah Street, PO Box 7979, Abu Dhabi, UAE Services UAE nationals and residents in Abu Dhabi emirate.

Spanish Consulate General — Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Services residents in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, RAK, and Umm Al Quwain.

Both offices process student visas. The Dubai consulate often has shorter appointment waiting times than Abu Dhabi. Appointment system: online through the respective office website (cita previa).

For UAE nationals: police clearance

UAE nationals get their criminal clearance from Dubai Police (Smart App or kiosks) or through the Ministry of Interior platform. The certificate must then be authenticated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for international use.

UAE has an apostille system — MOFA issues apostilles for official documents. Processing: typically 1–3 business days through the online MOFA portal.

For expatriates in UAE

You need a criminal clearance from your home country — not from UAE (unless you’ve lived there for the required period). The UAE police clearance may also be requested additionally.

Process varies by country. For Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, and other South/Southeast Asian applicants based in UAE: follow your home country’s clearance process and use the apostille from your home country’s competent authority.

Financial proof from UAE

UAE banks issue statements in English — convenient for the Spanish visa process with no translation needed.

Accepted UAE banks:

  • Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic
  • First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), ADIB
  • HSBC UAE, Standard Chartered UAE
  • Any international bank with UAE branch

The €600/month calculation in AED: At the approximate 2026 exchange rate of 1 EUR ≈ 3.95 AED:

  • 6-month course: €3,600 = approximately AED 14,200
  • 12-month course: €7,200 = approximately AED 28,400

Alternative: Wise multi-currency account — hold EUR directly in Wise, build your EUR balance, produce professional Wise statements in EUR. Consulates accept Wise statements without conversion confusion.

Processing time and timeline

Typical processing: 10–20 business days from the appointment date — one of the faster Spanish missions.

Recommended timeline:

  • 3 months before course: Enroll, get enrollment letter, book appointment
  • 2 months before: Get health insurance, bank statements, criminal clearance
  • 6–8 weeks before: Appointment day
  • After approval: 1–2 weeks for passport return (or collect in person)

After approval: before the flight

Connectivity from Spain: Du and Etisalat international roaming in Spain is expensive (€5–15/day). Order a Holafly eSIM before departure — unlimited data in Spain and across Europe, activates on landing.

Airport arrival: Welcome Pickups provides pre-booked transfers from Barcelona El Prat — driver meets you with your name in arrivals, fixed price, no negotiation. From €35.

First 30 days:

  • Empadronamiento (town hall address registration)
  • TIE card appointment at Extranjería within 30 days
  • Local Spanish SIM card (Lycamobile prepaid works with passport only)

Living in Spain as a UAE student or expat

Muslim students: Spain has a growing Muslim community. Halal restaurants and mosques are available in Barcelona and Madrid. The Tariq ibn Ziyad mosque in Madrid is the largest; several mosques operate in Barcelona including the Islamic Cultural Centre.

Weather comparison: Barcelona’s Mediterranean climate is milder than UAE’s — summers are warm (25–30°C) but comfortable by the sea, without Dubai’s extreme humidity. Winters are cool (10–15°C) — bring layers. UAE residents often find Spain’s summer very manageable compared to the Gulf.

Financial adjustment: Spain’s cost of living is significantly lower than Dubai. Students from UAE often have more purchasing power than they expected — €900–1,200/month covers comfortable student living in Barcelona.
