How to Collect Your TIE Card in Barcelona 2026: Step-by-Step

You’ve waited 6–8 weeks since your biometrics appointment. The SMS or email arrived saying your TIE card is ready. Now what? Here’s exactly what to do at the collection appointment — and what to bring.

What You Need to Bring

Do not go without these. Missing any one of them means a wasted trip and a rescheduled appointment:

• Original passport (the one you used for biometrics)
• Original visa (the Spanish visa sticker in your passport)
• Receipt from your biometrics appointment (the printed or PDF confirmation you received at the Extranjería)
• A photocopy of your passport photo page
• A photocopy of your visa

That’s it. You do not need new bank statements, new health insurance, or any other supporting documents at collection — those were submitted at biometrics.

Where to Go

Return to the same Extranjería office where you attended your biometrics appointment. Your card is assigned to that specific office.

Barcelona has several Extranjería locations:

• Pg. de Sant Joan, 189 — one of the busiest
• C/ de la Llacuna, 162 — Poblenou area
• Rambla del Poblenou, 1 — smaller office

Your appointment confirmation will specify which office. Do not go to the wrong one.

At the Appointment

1. Arrive on time or slightly early
2. Go to reception and present your biometrics receipt
3. You’ll be directed to a waiting area or called directly
4. An officer will verify your documents, take a final signature or photo if needed, and hand over the card
5. Check the card on the spot before leaving:
   • Name spelled correctly?
   • Date of birth correct?
   • Expiry date matches your visa?
   • NIE number visible?

If anything is wrong, flag it immediately while still at the office. Corrections after leaving are significantly more complicated.

What to Do If There’s a Problem

Card not ready yet: Occasionally the system says ready but the physical card isn’t there. Ask the officer to check again. If genuinely not available, they’ll give you a new collection date — get it in writing.

Errors on the card: Request a correction (solicitud de corrección) immediately. This is free and your right. It will take additional weeks to reissue.

Lost collection receipt: Bring extra ID (student ID, rental contract, anything with your name and address) and explain the situation at reception. Usually resolvable.

Appointment not showing in system: Bring the original email confirmation and ask to speak to a supervisor (supervisor or responsable). The appointment exists — sometimes system errors lose it.

After Collecting Your TIE

Do this immediately:

• Photocopy the card front and back — keep several copies
• Download the Cl@ve PIN app and register with your TIE — needed for many online government processes
• Update your health insurance provider with the TIE number if they asked for it
• Notify your bank if they required TIE to activate your account

Important: Your TIE is your primary ID in Spain. Carry it (or a good copy) at all times. Police stops asking for ID are rare but do happen.

When to Start Renewal

Your TIE expiry date matches your permit end date. Start the renewal process 60 days before expiry — not on the expiry date.

For language school students: remember the maximum 2-year total limit under the 2025 rules. If you’re approaching year 2, consider whether a university or FP program is the right next step.
