The Spain student visa is not one system — it is two. The path you choose determines whether you can work legally, how long you can stay, and what your options are after your course ends. Most students only discover the difference after they’ve already applied.

The Two Tracks: A Plain-English Summary

Track 1 — Language school visa: You come to study Spanish (or another language) at an accredited language school. Maximum stay: 2 years (initial visa + 1 renewal). No work rights. Must pass DELE/SIELE to renew. After 2 years, you must leave or switch to a different visa category entirely.

Track 2 — University / higher education visa (includes FP): You enrol in a university degree, master’s program, or vocational FP course. Visa covers your full enrollment period. Language School Visa: When It Makes Sense

The language school track is the right choice if:

• Your goal is specifically language learning — you want to spend 6 months to 2 years fully focused on Spanish before entering another life or career phase
• You don’t need to work — you have savings, family support, or a scholarship covering your costs
• You want flexibility — language courses are modular (you can start most months of the year), whereas university programs have fixed September enrolments
• You plan to return home or move to another country — you’re not seeking a long-term Spain residency pathway
• Your Spanish is not yet at B2 — and you need to reach that level before enrolling in a Spanish-taught degree program

The hard limits to know upfront

Under Royal Decree 1155/2024 (effective May 20, 2025):

1. One renewal only. After your initial language school visa expires, you can renew once for a second year. That is the absolute ceiling — 2 years total, no exceptions for language school students.
2. DELE/SIELE required to renew. You must show a passed language exam to get the second year. A failed exam = no renewal.
3. No work rights. This is fixed. There is no mechanism to add work authorisation to a language school visa.
4. Application must be made from home country. You cannot convert a tourist visa into a student visa while inside Spain.

University / FP Visa: When It Makes Sense

The university track is right if:

• You need or want to work while studying — the 30h/week automatic work right makes genuine part-time employment legal
• You want a qualification — a Spanish degree or FP diploma is a legitimate credential, not just a language certificate
• You plan to stay in Spain long-term — the job-seeker visa pathway after graduation is a real route to a work permit and eventually permanent residency
• You want to maximise your time in Spain without the 2-year ceiling — a 4-year degree means 4 years of valid student residence, renewable
• You are interested in Formación Profesional (FP) — public FP programs are free for all students including non-EU, and include mandatory internships from year one

The considerations to plan for

• Program start dates are fixed. Most Spanish university bachelor’s programs begin in September. Master’s may have a January intake too. You cannot start mid-year as you can with a language school.
• Language requirements may apply. Spanish-taught programs typically require B2 Spanish (DELE B2 or equivalent). English-taught programs (increasingly common in Barcelona) do not.
• Admission process takes time. University applications must be submitted 3–6 months before the course start. Budget time for document gathering, apostilles, and translation.
• Tuition fees apply at universities (though significantly lower than English-speaking countries). FP at public centers is free.
