Hong Kong Applicants: Two Situations
Situation 1: You hold an HKSAR passport and live in Hong Kong → Apply at the Spanish Consulate General in Hong Kong (Quarry Bay)
Situation 2: You hold a BNO passport or are legally resident in the UK → Apply at the Spanish Embassy in London or Spanish consulates in the UK
This guide covers primarily Situation 1. For UK-based applications, see our Spain Student Visa from UK guide.
Why Hong Kongers Choose Spain
Hong Kong’s internationally-minded population increasingly looks to European alternatives for education and residency:
- Excellent universities — Barcelona and Madrid host top-ranked EU institutions
- Mediterranean lifestyle — warm, outdoor culture; Barcelona resonates strongly with HK residents
- European residency pathway — Spain offers a 10-year path to citizenship; after 5 years, long-term EU residency
- Very affordable compared to HK — despite Barcelona’s reputation, it costs significantly less than Hong Kong
- English widely spoken in international and educational settings — easier adjustment
- EU access — Spanish TIE card allows free Schengen travel across 27 countries

|---|---|
| HKSAR passport + in HK | Spanish Consulate General: Dorset House, 979 King’s Road, Quarry Bay |
| BNO passport + in UK | Spanish Embassy London or regional consulates |
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Enrol at a Spanish institution
Secure acceptance from an accredited Spanish school or university.
Step 2: Obtain your Certificate of No Criminal Conviction and apostille
The certificate is issued by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF). Apply:
- Online: HKPF e-Services portal (hk.gov.hk)
- In person: HKPF reporting centres
Processing: 1–3 business days.
The certificate must be apostilled. China (including Hong Kong and Macau) joined the Hague Apostille Convention with effect from 7 February 2024. The apostille is now issued through the Legalisation Office of the Hong Kong Department of Justice (or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office in HK). Allow 3–5 business days.
Step 3: Translation (if needed)
Documents in English — including most HKPF certificates — do not require translation. Documents issued in Chinese (Traditional) must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado). Confirm with the Spanish Consulate exactly which documents need translation.
Step 4: Book your consulate appointment
Contact the Spanish Consulate General in Quarry Bay. Allow 2–4 weeks for appointment availability.
Step 5: Attend your appointment
Bring all originals, copies, and any translations. Documents submitted; biometrics may be taken.
Step 6: Wait for processing — 4–6 weeks
Step 7: Collect your visa and travel
Step 8: TIE card within 30 days of arriving in Spain (if staying 6+ months)

Common Mistakes Hong Kong Applicants Make
1. Not apostilling the HKPF certificate — China/HK joined the Hague Convention in February 2024; apostille is now required and available.
2. Applying for a Schengen tourist visa instead of Type D — for programs over 90 days, the Type D national visa is the correct application.
3. Assuming all HK documents are in English — some government documents are in Traditional Chinese and will need sworn translation.
4. BNO holders applying in HK instead of UK — if you hold a BNO and are living in the UK, apply at the Spanish Embassy London.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Spanish consulate in Hong Kong?
Yes. The Spanish Consulate General in Hong Kong is located at Dorset House, Taikoo Place, 979 King's Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. HKSAR passport holders and Hong Kong permanent residents apply here. Appointments are required.
Do Hong Kong documents need to be translated into Spanish?
Documents issued in English — including many Hong Kong government documents — do not require translation. Documents in Chinese must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado). Confirm with the Spanish Consulate which specific documents they require translated.
Can BNO (British National Overseas) passport holders apply differently?
Yes. If you hold a British National Overseas (BNO) passport or have relocated to the UK and are legally resident there, you apply at the Spanish Embassy in London or Spanish consulates in Manchester or Edinburgh instead of in Hong Kong. The UK-based application process applies to you as a UK resident.
Do I need a Schengen visa to enter Spain with an HKSAR passport?
Yes. HKSAR passport holders require a Schengen visa for any entry into Spain and the Schengen Area. For study programs exceeding 90 days, a long-stay national student visa (Type D) is required — a separate application from the standard Schengen short-stay visa.
What criminal record document is needed from Hong Kong?
A Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF). Applications are made online through the HKPF e-Services portal or in person at police reporting centres. The certificate must be apostilled — China (including Hong Kong) joined the Hague Apostille Convention in February 2024.
How much money do I need for a Spain student visa from Hong Kong?
€600 per month for the full duration of your course. Given Hong Kong's very high average income levels, meeting this threshold is typically straightforward. HKD, EUR, or USD bank statements are accepted.
