Night Trains from Barcelona 2026: Trenhotel, Routes, and How to Book

Night trains are one of Europe’s great slow-travel pleasures — you board in the evening, sleep, and arrive the next morning without losing a day of your trip or paying for a night’s accommodation. From Barcelona, the main overnight option is the Trenhotel to Madrid. Here’s how it works and whether it’s worth it.
The Trenhotel Barcelona–Madrid
The Trenhotel is RENFE’s overnight sleeper service connecting Barcelona Sants with Madrid Chamartín. It runs nightly in both directions.

Why take it instead of flying:
- No airport faff — Barcelona Sants and Madrid Chamartín are central, metro-connected
- No 2-hour early arrival requirement
- You arrive rested (or at least having tried to sleep) rather than exhausted at 6am
- Lower carbon footprint
- For weekend trips: you travel Friday night and arrive Saturday morning, gaining a full day
Why flying might still win:
- Vueling and Iberia have Barcelona–Madrid flights from €25–50 booked in advance (30-minute flight)
- The AVE high-speed train does Barcelona–Madrid in 2.5 hours
- If you’re going for a 2-night trip, losing a night on the train each way is a significant time cost
Accommodation Classes
Gran Clase (Solo Cabin)
A private cabin for one person. Fully flat bed, bedding included, dinner and breakfast included, private toilet/shower in premium cabins. Most expensive option — comparable to a hotel room price.
Best for: Business travel, couples (book two adjacent), maximum comfort.
Turista Plus (Shared Cabin — 4 Berths)
A 4-berth couchette cabin shared with strangers. Fold-down berths (upper/lower), pillow and blanket included, shared bathroom at end of car.
Best for: Students. The price-to-comfort ratio is good. Upper berths are slightly more private; lower berths are easier to access.
Price range: €35–80 per person depending on booking date and availability.
Butaca (Reclining Seat)
A reclining seat in a standard carriage. Cheapest option, but sleeping upright for 9 hours is genuinely uncomfortable.
Best for: Only if Turista Plus is sold out.
How to Book
RENFE website: renfe.com — search Barcelona Sants → Madrid Chamartín. Filter for Trenhotel or night trains specifically. Book in advance — popular dates sell out.
RENFE app: Available in English. Slightly easier to navigate than the website for mobile.
Omio or Rail Europe: Third-party booking platforms that show RENFE options alongside other European trains. Slightly easier UI; small booking fee.
Book early: Trenhotel prices are demand-based. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance secures the best cabin prices. Last-minute Turista Plus can be €80+.

Gran Clase includes dinner service and continental breakfast brought to your cabin. Turista Plus has a café bar car for drinks and snacks available during the journey.
The Journey Experience
Boarding: Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure. Cabins are assigned; a conductor shows you to your berth.
Sleeping: The train moves — there is some noise and movement. Light sleepers may want earplugs. The rhythm of the train is actually conducive to sleep for many people once you’re settled.
Arrival: Madrid Chamartín is a major station on the north side of Madrid, connected to the central metro network (lines 1, 5, and 10). You can be in the city centre within 20–30 minutes of arrival.
Other Train Options from Barcelona
Barcelona–Valencia (Day Train, Not Overnight)
No overnight option, but the ALVIA/EUROMED daytime service runs in ~3 hours and is excellent. Price: €25–60 depending on booking date. Far preferable to flying for this route.
Barcelona–Seville / Málaga (via Madrid)
No direct overnight option to Seville or Málaga. Option: take the Trenhotel to Madrid overnight, then an AVE connecting train to Seville (2.5h) or Málaga (2.5h) the same morning. Gives you a practical southern Spain trip without multiple hotel nights.
International Night Trains
The old Barcelona–Paris Elipsos Trenhotel was discontinued in 2013. As of 2026, there is no direct overnight train from Barcelona to Paris. The daytime route is: AVE Barcelona → Lyon (4.5h via TGV connection at the border), then TGV Lyon → Paris (2h). European rail authorities have discussed restoring overnight services as part of climate-conscious rail expansion, but no confirmed Barcelona–Paris night service is running as of this writing.
For Paris from Barcelona, current best options: TGV daytime connection (fast, reliable) or budget flight (Vueling, Ryanair, €30–80).
Is the Trenhotel Worth It?
Yes, if:
- You’re doing a Barcelona–Madrid weekend trip and want to maximise time in Madrid
- You enjoy the experience of slow travel
- You value not having to stay an extra night in one city
No, if:
- You’re going one-way and have flexibility on timing
- Budget is the primary concern (budget flights often undercut Trenhotel Turista Plus)
- You’re a light sleeper who can’t function on broken train sleep
The sweet spot: A return Barcelona–Madrid weekend — Trenhotel Friday night arriving Madrid Saturday morning, AVE or flight back Sunday evening. You get a full 2 days in Madrid with minimal accommodation nights.
