A language exchange — intercambio in Spanish — is the fastest free way to improve your spoken Spanish while living in Barcelona. You meet a Spanish speaker who wants to practice English (or your native language). You each speak the other’s language for 30 minutes. It costs nothing, happens in a café, and works surprisingly well if you do it right.

Why Intercambios Work

Classroom Spanish gives you grammar and vocabulary. Intercambios give you something no class can: unscripted conversation with a native speaker who is motivated to understand you and is patient when you make mistakes — because they’re making the same ones in your language.

Three intercambios per week, consistently, will advance your spoken Spanish faster than any other method outside of living with a Spanish-speaking flatmate.

How to Find a Partner

Apps (Best for Getting Started)

Tandem — the most widely used language exchange app globally. Create a profile listing your native language and the language you’re learning. Browse profiles by location (Barcelona) and send connection requests. Many Barcelona users are available for in-person meetings.

How to Structure a Session

An unstructured conversation quickly defaults to whichever language both people feel more comfortable in — usually English. Structure prevents this.

The 30/30 rule:

30 minutes in Spanish (the Spanish-speaking person corrects you)
30 minutes in English (you correct them)
Set a timer. When it goes off, switch languages. No exceptions.

Pick a topic in advance. Random conversation stalls quickly. Before you meet, agree on a topic — something that happened this week, a film you both saw, a place you visited. This gives you vocabulary to prepare and direction when the conversation dies.

Corrections: the gentle method. The most effective way to correct without breaking the flow: repeat the sentence back correctly without making a big deal of it. If they say “I go yesterday to the cinema,” you say “Oh, you went to the cinema? What did you see?” — the correction is implicit and conversation continues.

Ask your partner to do the same for you.

Avoid: Looking up words on your phone every 30 seconds (kills the flow). Only speaking English because it’s easier. Spending the whole session doing vocabulary drills — conversation is what you need.

Where to Meet

A café (cafetería) is the standard. Aim for somewhere with ambient noise but not too loud — you need to hear each other.

Good neighbourhoods for intercambio cafés:

Gràcia — many independent cafés with a relaxed, international crowd
El Born / Sant Pere — lively, mixed local/international
Eixample — central, easy to get to from most language schools

Avoid peak lunch hours (2–4pm) when cafés are at their loudest.

What to Do Between Sessions

The intercambio only works if you do work between meetings:

Review vocabulary from the session — make notes during and review after
Write a short summary of your conversation in Spanish — then ask your partner to correct it via WhatsApp
Voice messages on WhatsApp — some intercambio pairs continue practice this way between sessions

How Often to Meet

Once a week is the minimum to build momentum. Twice a week is the sweet spot for consistent improvement. Three times a week becomes a genuine friendship and fast-tracks your progress.

Most intercambio pairs meet for 1–1.5 hours (30/30 with a break in between). Coffee sessions fit naturally in the mid-morning (almuerzo around 10:30–11am) or mid-afternoon (5–6pm).

Beyond the Intercambio

Once your Spanish is conversational:

Move some of your daily life into Spanish — WhatsApp with classmates in Spanish, switch your phone language, watch Spanish-language Netflix
Find a Spanish flatmate if you’re in a shared apartment — even 10 minutes of daily conversation at home compounds quickly
Start attending Barcelona events in Spanish rather than English-only events
