El Prat Airport is 12km from Barcelona city centre. The journey is easy — but which option makes sense for a student arriving exhausted with two suitcases and a backpack depends on your budget, destination, and how much energy you have.

Pre-booked private transfer — the stress-free option

Welcome Pickups offers pre-booked transfers from El Prat with a driver holding a name sign in arrivals. Fixed price agreed before you travel — no meter, no negotiation, no wondering if you’re being overcharged.

What’s included:

  • Driver meets you in arrivals hall with your name
  • Help with luggage
  • Fixed price (typically €35-50 depending on destination and time)
  • Driver tracks your flight — waits if delayed

Best for: First arrival in Barcelona when you’re carrying significant luggage and don’t want to figure out public transport on 8 hours of sleep.

For subsequent trips once you know the city, you’ll switch to the metro or taxi. For day one with everything you own, the extra €10-15 over a taxi is worth it.

Taxi — simplest independent option

Barcelona has a regulated fixed taxi rate from the airport:

  • €39 daytime (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm)
  • €48 nights, weekends, and public holidays

This is a fixed tariff — no meter needed. The driver cannot charge more. Pay at the end with cash or card.

How to get one: Official taxi rank is immediately outside arrivals in both terminals. Queue is usually under 10 minutes except on busy days.

Tips:

  • Tell the driver your exact address before you get in
  • Keep the receipt (some students need this for reimbursement)
  • Don’t accept offers from people inside the terminal — only use the official rank

Aerobus — cheapest option for central Barcelona

The Aerobus is a dedicated bus service between El Prat and Plaça Catalunya (the main square in central Barcelona).

Cost: €6.75 one way, €12.50 return
Frequency: Every 5-10 minutes during the day
Journey time: ~35 minutes
Luggage: Yes, there’s luggage space

Terminal 1: Aerobus A1 → Plaça Catalunya
Terminal 2: Aerobus A2 → Plaça Catalunya

Limitation: It only goes to Plaça Catalunya. From there you need metro or taxi to your final destination. With heavy luggage, this can become cumbersome.

Best for: Students staying within walking distance of Plaça Catalunya, or those who want the cheapest option and don’t mind one connection.

Metro L9 — cheapest but hardest with luggage

The L9 Sud metro line connects both airport terminals to the Barcelona metro network.

Cost: €5.15 (includes airport supplement, T-Casual card not valid)
From T1: El Prat Airport - Terminal 1
From T2: El Prat Airport - Terminal 2
Frequency: Every 7-9 minutes

To reach central areas you need to transfer at Torrassa or Zona Universitaria to other lines.

The problem: Lots of stairs, no lifts on some sections, very crowded at peak times. With two suitcases and a backpack, this is a stressful experience on arrival day. Students consistently say this is fine for their second week, not for their arrival.

Best for: Light travelers, students who know the metro system, or anyone arriving at off-peak hours.

Train (Renfe Rodalies R2 Nord) — terminal 2 only

A Renfe commuter train runs from Terminal 2 to Barcelona Sants (main train station) and Passeig de Gràcia.

Cost: ~€4.60
Journey: Terminal 2 → Sants in 25 minutes, Passeig de Gràcia in 35 minutes
Frequency: Every 30 minutes
T10 card: Valid on this train (unusual — metro cards don’t work on L9)

Limitation: Only serves Terminal 2. T1 passengers need the free transfer bus between terminals first (+15 minutes).

Best for: Students staying near Sants or Eixample who are arriving at T2.

Which terminal will you arrive at?

Terminal 1 (T1): Most international long-haul flights, Iberia, Vueling, British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, Emirates.

Terminal 2 (T2): Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz, and other low-cost carriers. 3 sub-terminals (T2A, T2B, T2C) connected by walking.

If you don’t know which terminal, check your boarding pass — it’s listed there.

Our recommendation for students arriving for the first time

Book a pre-booked transfer. Welcome Pickups charges €35-50 all-in, your driver is waiting in arrivals, and you don’t have to figure out anything on arrival day. You have enough to think about.

The Aerobus is fine if you’re arriving near Plaça Catalunya and have manageable luggage.

The metro is for your second month, not your arrival day.

One more thing: connectivity on arrival

You’ll need your phone working the moment you land to contact your driver, host, or landlord. If you haven’t sorted a SIM yet, Holafly eSIM activates automatically at the airport — order it before you fly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a taxi from Barcelona airport to city centre cost?

Fixed taxi rate from El Prat to any point within the city boundaries: €39 during the day (€48 nights and weekends). This is a regulated flat rate — no meter. No need to negotiate.

How long does it take to get from Barcelona airport to city centre?

Aerobus: 35 minutes to Plaça Catalunya. Metro L9 Sud to L5 transfer: 45-60 minutes. Taxi or transfer: 20-30 minutes (without traffic), up to 60 minutes in rush hour.

Is Aerobus good for students with luggage?

Yes — it has luggage storage areas and drops at Plaça Catalunya. The disadvantage is it only goes to Plaça Catalunya, not your specific destination. Good if you're staying near the centre.

Is the Barcelona metro good from the airport?

L9 Sud goes from both terminals to the city, but requires a transfer to reach central areas. It's cheap (€5.15 one-way with airport supplement) but with heavy luggage and a backpack the stairs and crowded cars are uncomfortable on arrival day.
