Why Egyptians Choose Spain

Spain has become an increasingly popular destination for Egyptian students seeking European education:

  • Quality European education — Spanish degrees are recognised across the EU
  • Mediterranean connection — similar climate, Mediterranean culture and lifestyle
  • More affordable than UK or Germany — Barcelona and Madrid cost significantly less
  • Growing Egyptian student community — established communities in major Spanish cities
  • Pathway to EU residency — a student visa can lead to long-term residency and eventual citizenship (10-year standard path)
  • Spanish is learnable — Egyptian students often find Spanish phonetics more accessible than German or Dutch

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Enrol at a Spanish institution

Secure acceptance from an accredited Spanish school or university.

Step 2: Obtain your criminal record and apostille

The criminal record is issued by the Ministry of Interior of Egypt (General Directorate of Criminal Evidence and Investigation). Egypt joined the Hague Apostille Convention in October 2023, so the document can now be apostilled through the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Allow 2–3 weeks for both steps.

Step 3: Get sworn translations

All Arabic-language documents must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado). Certified translators in Cairo can handle Arabic-to-Spanish translation for visa purposes.

Step 4: Book your BLS appointment

Book at egypt.blsspainvisa.com. BLS charges a service fee on top of the Spanish visa fee.

Step 5: Attend your BLS appointment

Bring all originals, copies, and certified translations. BLS collects biometrics and forwards to the Spanish Embassy.

Step 6: Wait for embassy processing — 4–6 weeks

Step 7: Collect your visa via BLS

Step 8: Apply for TIE card within 30 days of arriving in Spain (if staying 6+ months)

1. Applying directly at the Embassy instead of through BLS — all Egypt applications go through BLS International.

2. Missing sworn translation — Arabic documents must be translated by a certified sworn translator; commercial translations are not accepted.

3. EGP-only bank statements — supplement with EUR or USD accounts for clear financial evidence.

4. Not apostilling — Egypt joined the Hague Convention in October 2023; apostille is now required and available through the MFA.

5. Late start — full process takes 10–12 weeks minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Egyptian citizens need a Schengen visa to enter Spain?

Yes. Egyptian citizens require a Schengen visa for any entry into Spain and the Schengen Area. For study programs exceeding 90 days, a long-stay national student visa (Type D) is required — this is a separate application from the standard Schengen tourist visa.

Does BLS Egypt handle Spain visa applications?

Yes. Spain uses BLS International as its Visa Application Centre in Egypt. Applications for Spanish visas are submitted through BLS Egypt (egypt.blsspainvisa.com), not directly at the Spanish Embassy. BLS collects your documents, biometrics, and fees, then forwards the application to the Spanish Embassy in Cairo.

Do Egyptian documents need to be translated into Spanish?

Yes. Documents in Arabic must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado). Allow budget for translations of your criminal record, any educational certificates, and other Arabic-language documents.

How long does Spain student visa processing take from Egypt?

Allow 2–3 months: 2–3 weeks for criminal record and apostille, 1 week for sworn translations, 1–2 weeks for a BLS appointment, and 4–6 weeks for embassy processing. Start at least 3 months before your course.

What criminal record is needed for Egyptian applicants?

A criminal record certificate from the Ministry of Interior of Egypt (General Directorate of Criminal Evidence and Investigation). The document must be apostilled — Egypt joined the Hague Apostille Convention in October 2023, so apostille is now available through the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The certificate must then be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

How much money do I need for a Spain student visa from Egypt?

€600 per month for the full duration of your course. EUR or USD bank statements are strongly recommended alongside EGP statements, as they demonstrate more stable financial means to the consulate.
