Why Kazakhstanis Choose Spain

Spain has become an increasingly popular destination for students from Kazakhstan:

  • Quality European education — Spanish universities are internationally ranked, with degrees recognised across the EU
  • Mediterranean lifestyle — warm climate, coastal cities, a cultural experience very different from Central Asia
  • Affordable compared to Western Europe — Barcelona and Madrid are significantly cheaper than London, Paris, or Germany
  • Large Russian-speaking community — Spain’s growing community of Russian-speaking expatriates makes integration easier
  • Pathway to EU residency — studying in Spain opens doors to long-term residency and eventual citizenship (10-year standard path)
  • Strong language school market — Barcelona and Madrid have dozens of accredited Spanish language schools with intensive programs for all levels

Where to Apply: BLS Kazakhstan

Spain processes student visa applications in Kazakhstan through BLS International:

Service PointCityAddress
BLS Kazakhstan VACAlmatyConfirm current address at kz.blsspainvisa.com
BLS Kazakhstan VACAstanaConfirm current address at kz.blsspainvisa.com

Check the BLS Kazakhstan website for current addresses and appointment availability before visiting.

The Spanish Embassy in Almaty makes the final visa decision; BLS collects and forwards your application.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Enrol at a Spanish institution

Secure acceptance from an accredited Spanish school or university. The acceptance letter must state program name, start and end dates, weekly hours, and confirmation of enrolment.

Step 2: Obtain your criminal record and apostille

The criminal record certificate is issued by the Committee of Legal Statistics and Special Accounting under the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan. Request it in person at the Committee’s regional offices or through their online portal. The certificate must be apostilled by the Ministry of Justice of Kazakhstan.

Step 3: Get sworn translations

Documents in Kazakh or Russian must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified Spanish translator (traductor jurado). This includes your criminal record, educational certificates, and any other non-Spanish documents.

Step 4: Book your BLS appointment

Schedule an appointment at the BLS Kazakhstan Visa Application Centre in Almaty or Astana through kz.blsspainvisa.com. BLS also charges a service fee on top of the Spanish visa fee.

Step 5: Attend your appointment

Bring all originals, copies, and sworn translations. BLS collects your biometrics and documents, and forwards everything to the Spanish Embassy.

Step 6: Wait for processing

The Spanish Embassy in Almaty processes the application. Total time from BLS submission: 4–8 weeks.

Step 7: Collect your passport via BLS

Your passport with the visa is returned through the BLS office. Some BLS locations also offer courier delivery.

Step 8: Apply for TIE card after arrival

If staying 6+ months, apply for your TIE card within 30 days of arriving in Spain.

Document Checklist

  • Visa application form (EX-00) — completed in Spanish, signed, no corrections

  • Official acceptance letter from your Spanish institution
  • Proof of tuition payment

  • Medical certificate — from a licensed doctor within the last 3 months; no serious communicable disease per WHO 2005 IHR
  • Criminal record (Prosecutor General’s Committee) — apostilled + sworn Spanish translation
  • Proof of accommodation in Spain

Translation requirements

All documents in Kazakh or Russian must be translated by a certified sworn translator (traductor jurado). The translation must be:

  • Stamped and signed by the sworn translator
  • Complete (no summaries)
  • In standard Castilian Spanish

You can find sworn translators in Almaty and Astana who specialise in Spanish for visa purposes.

Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate €600 per month for the full duration of your course.

Course DurationMinimum Funds

6 months€3,600

  • Cover hospitalisation, GP visits, and emergency care
  • Have no co-payment — strictly enforced
  • Be valid from arrival through the end of your program

Common Mistakes Kazakhstani Applicants Make

1. Applying directly at the Embassy instead of through BLS All Kazakhstan applications go through BLS International. Showing up at the Spanish Embassy without a BLS appointment will not work.

2. Missing sworn translation Kazakh and Russian documents must be translated by a certified Spanish sworn translator. Standard commercial translations are rejected.

3. KZT-only bank statements The consulate applies the exchange rate, but EUR/USD accounts convey stability more clearly. Include both.

4. Not apostilling the criminal record The committee certificate and apostille are separate steps. The apostille is mandatory before submitting to BLS.

5. Starting too late Certificate + apostille + translation + BLS appointment + processing = minimum 10–12 weeks. Start 3 months before your course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Kazakhstani citizens need a Schengen visa to enter Spain?

Yes. Kazakhstani citizens require a Schengen visa for any entry into Spain and the Schengen Area. For study programs exceeding 90 days, a separate long-stay national student visa (Type D) is required — this is a different application from the standard Schengen tourist visa.

Do Kazakhstani documents need to be translated into Spanish?

Yes. Documents issued in Kazakh or Russian must be translated into Spanish by a sworn/certified translator (traductor jurado) in Spain or in the country where you are applying. This includes your criminal record, any educational certificates, and all non-Spanish-language documents.

What criminal record do I need for the Spain student visa from Kazakhstan?

You need a criminal record certificate from the Committee of Legal Statistics and Special Accounting under the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan (Бас прокуратура). The certificate must be apostilled by the Ministry of Justice and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.

How long does Spain student visa processing take from Kazakhstan?

Allow 2–3 months: 2–3 weeks for the criminal record and apostille, 1 week for sworn translation, 1–3 weeks for a BLS appointment, and 4–6 weeks for consulate processing. Start the process at least 3 months before your course begins.

Does BLS Kazakhstan handle Spain visa applications?

Yes. Spain uses BLS International as its Visa Application Centre in Kazakhstan. Applications are submitted through BLS Kazakhstan (kz.blsspainvisa.com), not directly at the Spanish Embassy. BLS collects your documents, biometrics, and fees, and forwards the application to the Spanish Embassy in Almaty for processing.

How much money do I need for a Spain student visa from Kazakhstan?

€600 per month for the full duration of your course. EUR or USD bank statements are strongly recommended alongside KZT statements, as they demonstrate more stable financial means.
